I just installed an Asus motherboard which has an on-board RealTek Audio Driver. The driver version is 5.10.0.5024, and the code is ALC861. I can open sound files, and the .mp3 and .wav files can play through system speakers, but I cannot record from an application like RealPlayer or WinAmp into Sound Forge. The mixer application from the audio driver in Control Panel gives me a CD volume control, a Line In, Balance, and a Stereo Mixer. I can record in Sound Forge from the Line In applet when I use a video capture card, but I cannot get sound into Sound Forge through the computer (what used to be the "What U Hear" control in my old sound card). Sound Forge can see the audio driver but Line In and CD volume produce levels that are low and useless, and Balance overdrives the application by producing highly distorted sound. Has anyone had experience with this kind of sound driver and how it relates to Sound Forge. I'm still looking for a way to record from players like RealPlayer and WinAmp into Sound Forge. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Neal Lavon Takoma Park, MD USA |

I think I figured it out. The noise from inside the computer is so loud (with both the processor fan and the power supply fan right next to one another) that the sound level is nearly to clip range before any sound goes in. I lowered the volume to extreme ranges using "Stereo Mix" from the RealTek audio driver controls and it was able to record at acceptable levels. I'm getting a new case where the noise should be more evenly spread around so maybe this problem won't occur then. Neal Lavon Takoma Park, MD USA |
