Is there any way to make acd-zip the default?

Not that I know of, but once you open an ACD-ZIP and subsequently save, it'll stay in that format.

What you could do is create a blank project and save it as "ACID ZIP Template.acd-zip" and use ACID's "automatically open last project on startup" feature to start off with it. (You'd still have to use the "save as" option so that your template ACD-ZIP is not modified when you go to save.)
