Subject:sudden sample drop-outs / silence: new problem

I'm having a new problem. In a new porject, I'll have a large WAV file (doesn't seem to be happening with smaller ones, I don't think). A One-Shot. After a few seconds, the sample goes SILENT completely. Sometimes it will come back in, sometimes it's gone forever. If I click on a silent part of the sample with the cursor / I-beam, I can get that section to play. What's going on? My CPU usage isn't particularly high -- maybe 20-30% at the time of the "drop outs." (PF Usage is 210 MB, whatever PF stands for.) All I can figure out is that these are larger WAV files than I'm used to working with. (It just happened with one that's 6.65 MB.) But still -- I seem to have the memory & CPU power to handle them, as far as I can tell. |

Sounds like a buffer problem but that’s just a guess. Do you still only have a Pentium III at 731 MHz, 192 Megs RAM, and Audigy 2 soundcard that you did back in December? If so, I would suspect that you are at the lower limit of the specifications. If you have bought a new computer then perhaps its not tweak to be a DAW. Are you using the ASIO drivers for your sounds card? If you have the Audigy, is your project set to 48K sample rate? What’s the sample rate of the wav file? We need to know more about your specs to be able to help. ~jr |

Can't say I can help you out with specifics, but I thought I'd let you know that 7Megs is NOT a large file for Acid. I would tend to suggest looking at your soundcard also. Maybe, a long shot, your video acceleration settings? When maxxed out, this setting tends to affect alot of things for who knows what reasons. Sorry I can't be of more help. Mario |

I was experimenting, and fixed the problem by changing my AUDIO DEVICE setting from the Default of Windows Sound Mapper to WINDOWS CLASSIC WAVE DRIVER. Why'd this work? Any other settings maybe I should tweak while I'm in this mood, for better performance? Is playback buffering good at the default of 0.35? |

If you have an Audigy card why aren't you using the Creative ASIO device? This should give you the best performance. ~jr |

My last setting is working great. I have an creative audigy platinum ex 2 -- would it be better to set to CREATIVE ASIO, or SB AUDIGY ASIO 24/96 (DF00), or SB AUDIGY ASIO (DF00). I have no idea what the differences are. |

I’m not sure what the difference is between the CREATIVE ASIO and the SB AUDIGY ASIO (DF00) setting is since they are both 16 bit at 48KHz sample rate. The SB AUDIGY ASIO 24/96 (DF00) is for when you wan to record 24 bit at 96KHz sample rate. The ASIO drivers talk directly to the hardware so there is much lower latency then by using the Windows drivers. If it’s working for you now then don’t change it. If you were doing any MIDI recording, you would definitely want to switch to one of the ASIO drivers to get the latency under 10ms. ~jr |
