You need to use the Beatmapper to map the acapella track to the tempo of the song. Then you can add any beat you want. If the acapella was done to a click track, it should not drift once it's beatmapped properly. If not, you may have to cut the acapella track up and beatmap it a several parts in the file to keep it in synch. Check the “Using the Beatmapper” section of the help file for more info on how to do this.

You may want to use beatmapper on the full song. When you're done copy the tempo from track properties and paste it on the acapella's tempo in track properties. Most times it's easier that way.

Acid needs help determining the tempo of long files. They don't necessarily start on on beat or even have beat information. So when you insert a large file such as your acapella, the beatmapper wizard pops up. It has a metronome and visual cues to mark where beats are. The tempo changes as you change these cues. Hope this helps. It's really easy but the best way to understand is to try it.

The Beatmapper is a component of the Pro version of ACID starting with version 3, that will take a long wav file and map it to Beats Per Minute (BPM). Once you have done this, ACID can map it to the project tempo and map all the other loops to match perfectly.

A quick search on Google shows a short Beatmapper tutorial here. If you like visual training there is an excellent tutorial DVD called: VASST ACID for Non-Linear Editors which I reviewed on the DMN Forums.

The bottom line is, you need to read up on the ACID Beatmapper and how to use it if you want to map an acapella track into your project. When you dragged and dropped the acapella onto a track the beatmapper should have opened automatically.

Try double-clicking on track icon in the track header for the acapella track to bring up the track properties. The General tab will have a dropdown box labeled "Track type:". Change this from whatever it is to Beatmapped. On the Stretch Tab there will be a button called Beatmapper Wizard.... this will bring up the Beatmapper. Now read the manual or on-line help on how to use it.

You know it occurs to me that the Beatmapper is going to try and guess the BPM but its going to be wrong because it will assume that the beginning of the audio is the beginning of the measure. In your case, the track is acapella so the beginning of the measure is probably silent until a word is sung. You are going to have to manually tell the Beatmaper where the beginning of the measure is. This is going to be key for you getting is right and will probably be very hard with only a vocal track to go by. Don’t get discouraged. Good luck, and we’re always here to help.

Try googling some on this subject. This is an art form, and often requires a lot of skill. Usually it involves pitch shifting to get as close as possible to the new tempo and still sound natural, and then cutting the vocal up and manually placing phrases, and sometimes individual words. This will take a learning curve.

If this at all helps you:

Calculate how long a measure of music is in seconds.

Divide 240 by the length in seconds to get your tempo.

E.g., if a measure of music is 3 seconds long:

240 / 3 = 80 BPM

If you need to find out how many seconds you need for a sample to fit within a particular tempo, divide 240 by the tempo to get the length in seconds:

240 / 80 = 3 seconds

These formulas may come in handy if you need to fit a certain sample within a certain tempo, for example.
