BLUFFTITLER .avi won't open in Vegas?

fultro wrote on 7/5/2004, 10:08 PM
Blufftitler creates .AVIs with different codecs that open fine in Media Player and Virtual Dub but, though they preview fine in Vegas they will not open.
The Vegas Explorer shows these files to be "CMX3600 : AVID / FINAL CUT".
All other AVIs behave correctly in Vegas.
Furthermore - even if I open one of these Blufftitler files in Virtual dub and save it in another codec I still have the problem.
Very curious - anybody familiar with it?
Many thanks

Vegas won't open AVID files, and I don't know where the Final Cut is coming into play. You should be creating an uncompressed file out of Bluff anyway, unless you don't mind a little loss when rerendering the MSDV codec. Or, output sequential TGA or PNG files. You'll get better results.

Thanks for the quick response Spot -
I have tried both uncompressed .avi and .tga - negative response
too bad - I like the results I get with BluffT
any other ideas?

Personally, I have been able to do AVI, TGA sequence, and uncompressed with no problem at all. All (from Bluff TItler) open in Vegas for me.

With respect to AVI's, you can select the codec that is used for the AVI output.

You may want to try a different one (codec).

I have tried at least 6 codecs as well as uncompressed
All result in files that every other player on my machine will open except Vegas which insists on seeing them as AVID files

There's a little program around the net that'll read an AVI file to tell you what codec it uses, maybe that'll give you a clue. Must admit I'm a bit confused, I thought CMX files are like an EDL but with transitions and FXs defined.
fultro wrote on 7/6/2004, 12:49 AM
yes they are -- EDL that is - which is why this is so strange -- only Vegas identifies it as an EDL
I have a few apps that tell me what codec I am using for each .AVI and in every case it correctly shows what codec I used to output from BluffTitler - and in every case that AVI works in Media Player
It always shows up as an EDL in Vegas

Then the next suggestion would be to do a repair install of Vegas so it's the last app installed. Sounds like you've installed something that's taken over or damaged a dll file or other registry file so that Bluff is either not outputting the correct information or that has caused something in Vegas to be broken. I'm able to output several formats from Bluff and open them in Vegas as well.

OK Thanks again Spot -
I reinstalled BluffT and then Vegas -
Same situation
This seems like a Vegas problem to me - BluffT files behave normally in all other apps and utilities
I'd sure like to be able to use all of my BluffT work in Vegas

I just opened Bluff Titler, exported the default random screen to an uncompressed AVI file, and it loaded without problems into Vegas 5.

I too have been using Bluff with Vegas 5 without any problems as well.

Did you find a solution to this problem? I've been getting something simlar with straight still images. jpg's png's tif's all showing as CMX3600 EDL: Avid/Final Cut in the status pane of the Vegas explorer. I can't put them into my project cause Vegas spits the dummy on them, like it's trying to parse it as something else (And EDL I assume)

Tried moving the files. No go. Tried a new project, no go. Restarted Vegas, no go.

The avi analyzer is called Gspot. Do a search with Google.

You don't have the word 'TITLE' (all uppercase) in the filename do you? I've found a bug in Vegas caused by this.
DGrob wrote on 8/1/2004, 6:13 AM
Or in the folder name, or as part of another word BLUFFTITLER in the file or folder name. Darryl

I'll BET you've got a default naming convention from Bluff that puts "TITLE" somewhere in the process? This then "upsets" V5. Please tell us. It will add to our thoughts on this.

Hmm just looking at your subject line..... is "BLUFFTITLER.avi" the actuall file name you saving as?
Thats definatly it, if you have the word TITLE in either a file or folder name somewhere, try this name a folder on your desktop "bluff" lower case.
rerender those bluff avi's saving as a file name without the word title (upper or lowercase just to be safe ) to that folder.
Bet you'll see the file properties show quicktime .mov and not CMX 3600 etc...
See my post under wildfx or wildfx pro

I'm looking "closely" at everything I've done with projects for folders or filenames that I'ev used within .. . . er . . .video making called TITLE .. know what I mean? Likethe folder I keep my film titles in? Or the TITLEs I give to various "kept" Text Presets: " TITLE MyMovie version 1a " .. . see what I mean?

. . hmmmmm .. . a pondering Pom,

Not sure if the original poster ever got their problem resolved, but we did hear from a BluffTitler user about a similar problem and Sony acknowledged that it's a bug in Vegas.

Turns out that it has to do with the name of the folder you are trying to import from. Don't save the files exported by BluffTitler to a folder whose name contains the word "title"! This sounds weird, but it's a real bug. Moving the AVIs that you are trying to import to a different folder (one that does not have the string "title" in its name) and then re-importing from that folder into Vegas should solve the problem.

I've attached the note from Sony Vegas support where they acknowledge this bug.

Keith

Thanks for writing.

We have tracked down your problem and it would be caused by the folder
location (title) that you are using to store this file. If you change the
name of the folder that this media is sitting in, Vegas should open the file
just fine. We have found a bug in our software when files and folder
locations contain the name "title" such as BluffTITLEr. This should be
changed in a future update once available. For the time being, change the
folder name, or move this file in question and you should not have any
problems opening it.

Was this fixed in 5.0b?

I've been storing my files in a folder called "titles" for a while now ... BluffTitler-generated AVIs wouldn't open, but I tried again the other night and it worked a-ok.

I'll have to check where that AVI was stored on the HD now.
JasonMurray wrote on 8/12/2004, 1:36 AM
Weird.

D:\Titles\Blacklisted\MainTitle.AVI

It's a BT-generated AVI with alpha ... and its working just fine.

(Maybe 2 titles cancel each other out? :))
jetdv wrote on 8/12/2004, 7:56 AM
The problem is only when "TITLE" is all upper-case

It was discovered after 5.0b was released.

've been storing my files in a folder called "titles" for a while now ...

Try it with TITLE in all caps.
