Another question! Using Creative ASIO I can't use 44,100 HZ but must use 48,000 Hz. Is this a function of ASIO or an indication of the limitations of my Audigy Card. Are there any better Sound Cards out there that support midi? Thanks, Chris (Hunt) |

Is this the Audigy 1? I know that did 16-bit/48 kHz internally. There are definitely better, like Echo's MiaMIDI and M-Audio's Audiophile 2496. I can give links to those cards if you need them. (Note, however, they have MIDI but don't have any synths onboard.) Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid mD's ACIDplanet Page Guitars 4 Kids |

Thanks for all the replies Iacobus, Yes it's the old Audigy. From what you wrote I guess that this is a limitation of my SoundCard. When you write about the MiaMIDI and the Audiophile 2496 what do you mean about them not having any synths onboard? If I hookup my keyboard can I use plugins such as the Claw and Cheeseboard from within Acid? Sorry if this is a dull question. Thanks, Chris |

What you need is softsynths. Alot are available free from KVR's site. You'd connect your midi keyboard to the soundcard, select the ASIO driver for your soundcard in Acid's preferences, and load up a softsynth and you're off. (These instructions edited for content and to fit your screen). :-) I have an el cheapo Kaysound generic midi keyboard with an M-Audio Firewire 410 soundcard. Works great with Acid/Reason. With the available softsynths, I doubt you'll ever run out of excellent sounds for your projects. Mario |

Thanks, I think I get it now. The cards mentioned can use soft synths but don't have any built in. I just realised I have a lot of soundfonts. Does anyone know offhand if these can be used with the cards Iacobus mentioned? I have Fruity Loops. I get confused how all the different elements fit together. Does the use of soundfonts depend upon the soft synth used or the soundcard or both? Chris |

SoundFonts are not supported by either of those cards. Sorry. I believe SoundFonts load into the memory provided by the Audigy, so it sounds entirely hardware-based. (Didn't someone mention there are soft synths that can load SoundFonts though? I'm not a propellerhead in the matter, so...) > Didn't someone mention there are soft synths that can load SoundFonts though? rgc:Audio makes a free Soundfont player called SFZ which does an excellent job. You can adjust the quality based on how much CPU power you want to consume. Samplers like HALion and Kontakt also play Soundfonts (I have both) so there is no need to have a hardware card that plays them unless you have a very old computer (less than 800Mhz) and have to watch your CPU consumption. Even then you will need to send your audio out back into your PC to record the sounds coming from the card. SoftSynths are definitely the way to go. I have an Audigy 2 and I never use the onboard Soundfont hardware. I regret buying the Audigy and will probably upgrade to an M-Audio Firewire 410 eventually. ~jr |

Thanks for the link. It's good to know that if I ditch the audigy I'll still be able to use all my soundfonts. Cheers, Chris |
