Subject:Fill in the blank...

We haven't had a wishlist thread for quite a while. So if you have something in mind, complete this sentence.

"I wish Sound Forge would/could _________."

Let's just get "remove vocals" out of the way right now ;-).

Rephrase as you see fit, but please keep it concise. An appropriate response might be "support VST effects".

Thanks,
J.

1) allow multiple instances

2) allow drag & drop crossfades

added 2004-08-09

3) when recording, have the ability to close the current file and create a new file on the fly with no gap. This would be comparable to auto-scene detection in VidCap, except manually triggered with a mouse click or key stroke.

3a) (completely non-Sound Forge related, but the compliment to #3) ... the ability to drop markers on the fly while capturing with VidCap. It just seems like both Sound Forge and VidCap should be capable of both of these functions. Of course, being able to manually detect scene & split to a new file while using VidCap would be a nice feature too.

I wish Sound Forge would.......

1. Allow Disc-at-Once CD burning
2. Have a DX I/O plugin, so that I could include external hardware processors within the plugin chainer.
3. Allow Input monitoring through DX plugins
4. Have the ability to import .MP3 ID3 information when opening an existing .MP3 file.
5. Have an averaging adjustment in the Spectral Analyzer
6. Import/export multiwave formats for mastering, like Dolby Digital .AC3, Microsoft multitrackwave format, MLP, and DTS.
7. Improve the UI on the multiband dynamics, showing a visual of each bands crossover points and filter order slope. Allow adjusments within the visual UI of the band crossover points.
8. Copy Statistics information to the clipboard
9. Playback and Record simultaneously
10. Fix this minor annoyance.......

a. Do a "save as"....... save as box appears
b. Single click on an existing file, therefore putting that files name in the save as box.
c. Alter the name in the save as box
d. Deselect the file I clicked on in Step b
e. Hit save.

The problem with the above steps is that I commonly use the heading of an existing files, to name a new file, then I alter the ending of the name, to save time on having to retype redundant name information. Although, I deselected the file highlight in step "d" and the name is different from step "c", Sound Forge still thinks I'm trying to save over that existing file and prompts me,"do I really want to save over that existing file". The work around is for me to have to alter the name after step "d" by adding a character and then deleting it, or I have to remember to reverse step "c" and step "d".

Thanks for asking,
red

when zoomed in at 8:1 or more, please make the little dots that mark the start of each sample an optional feature. i hate those dots with a passion and i'd love to be able to turn them off.

a minor issue, i know, but it's the only thing really bugging me. :)

... vastly improve upon the now very out-dated XFX suite. These plugins really are antiques.

Well -- I cant beat Red's comments -- but I will say the following:

(01) Have a spectral meter that can be docked
(02) Improve upon recording features - automatically place markers where there is clipping
(03) Permit Full CD authoring with CD Text
(04) Permit multiple instances
(05) Support VST's - (not all wrappers are created equal)
(06) Have a macro building fuction (like in Adobe Audition)
(07) Have a dual layer two track interface (like in CDA) for mixing two files
(08) Skinnable interface
(09) Open a bank of audio files in a folder and "stitch" them together as one long audio file
(10) Use the DC offset as a pluggin
(11) Custom tool bars
(12) Offer a mastering suite like Izotope Ozone (but does not use so much processing time)
(13) Permit the removal of MP3 Audio header file (some new MP3 tools allow this)
(14) Change the color of markers
(15) Use a routine where you could enter the file size and then the respective compression options would automatically show up depending upon the file type
(16) Audio file manager
(17) Scripting features - (For example in MATLAB, you can grab any portion of an audio file and work on it specifically - applying filters, etc. - not an audio tool but easily works on audio data)
(18) In the main interface have the ability to draw regions and use as CD regions - and then include CD region name as CD Text
(19) Generate complex signals such as ramp - sine - sine exponential - square
(20) Finally include -- a note pad - which opens with each file, that a note was created

These additions -- would make this STAPLE tool -- even more impressive --

I wish Sound Forge could offer multitrack features.

I also wish Sound Forge could open all my .MP3 files, like Windows Media Player and Nero can.

use its own effects/processes in plugin chainer.

and red's idea for using outboard processors...

Have multiband dynamics work like it's supposed to - like it used to b4 it got broke - like we've been promised for a while now.

I second all your suggestions and Rednroll.

> (05) Support VST's - (not all wrappers are created equal)
Wrappers work really 100%. DirectiXer works flawlessly with Sound Forge.

> (06) Have a macro building fuction (like in Adobe Audition)
yes that makes even more sense since SF dropped Batch Converter.

>(12) Offer a mastering suite like Izotope Ozone (but does not use so much processing time)
I doubt that you can achieve the same quality and reduce CPU. And SF doesn't have a good history in high quality plugs. I rather would like them to focus on DOING SOMETHING with SF and CDA.

Sorry, I have to keep adding addendums to my list. As I use Sound Forge, I run into things that I then remember as I'm working.

I also agree with Sonicerik's suggestion:
"(06) Have a macro building fuction (like in Adobe Audition)
yes that makes even more sense since SF dropped Batch Converter."

I've been recently building my own personal music collection which I've been converting to .MP3. I have been extracting from CD, doing peak normalization, and then to get this wide variety of music close in level I use the RMS normalization. I'm up to 520 songs I'm putting onto one DVD Rom, and having a macro function would have saved me lots of time.

Addendum:
12. Add a search feature in the explorer Window.

For example like the Windows Search feature under the Start menu. There are often times when I'm looking for a specific or a group of .Mpeg or .MP3, or .Wav files and can't remember where I last saved it too, so I have to goto the windows search window and do a search on *.Mpeg. Then drag the windows found files into Sound Forge. It would be nice to do a search in the Sound Forge explorer window on something like *.MP3 and all my .MP3 files I have on my PC will appear in the Sound Forge explorer window.

... save files or extract regions by default to the same folder the current sound file was opened from, not the folder where the last "save" operation took place. I find that behaviour a bit odd. Why would I want to extract regions or "save as" in order to create a new version of a sound file in a folder other than the one I'm working in (by default, that is)?

personally, i like it the way it is, so if this is going to be implemented at least make it optional, not mandatory.

OK -- just a minor addition to my wish list

When I mentioned VST's and wrappers etc., I was really thinking about the TC Electronic Powercore. TC says that without coded support for VST's in SF7, the Powercore just wont work, for us Sony Sonic Foundry Users.

additionally I want to add:

(21) The ability to modify line attributes for time line driven pluggins

My two biggies are:
- VST support (wrappers work, but not that good)
- DAO burning (Incorporate CD Arc w/text write) most all of SF competitors offer it)

I'd be curious to know what's wrong with the VST wrappers... I never saw any single VST plugin that wouldn't work with the wrappers!

Well is there a wrapper that can wrap around TC Electronics Power Core element?

TC says there is none

Maybe it's just my set up (SF-7 XP-Pro, Intel P4) but the meters, ect do not work unless you click and hold a parameter and some don't work at all. I can preview fine but the visuals help a lot. I'm runnning the Spinaudio wrapper. The vst *.dll files are also hidden which is annoying unless you "un-hide" them.

1. When in options, have the ability to move icons within toolbars & add spacing in them simply by dragging/dropping them (similar to how Microsoft Office does). Currently, SF's custumizable toolbars are tedious and not very easy to organize.

2. Have better pitch/time stretching capabilities, along with the ability to resample both pitch & length at once--similar to speeding up or slowing down a recording.

The Cakewalk VST Adapter wich came with my Sonar-3 wrapped all Element plugins that came with the card.
http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/kb2004215.asp

DirectiXer took care of 'TC Thirty', the Vox amp plugin.
Cakewalks adapter didn't handle this one.
http://tonewise.com/DirectiXer/

Personally I prefer Directixer wich apparently does a better job of converting difficult plugins.

wish Sound Forge would/could
1) Implement something like Adobe Audition's "Group Waveform Normalize": It lets you normalize the volume of multiple open waveforms using an automatic RMS procedure (weighted towards mid frequencies, normally responsible for human percieved volume) that can approximately set the volume of all tracks of a CD, you are about to burn, right away in one application.
2) I agree with others, VST support would be nice so no one would bother with wrappers...
Just my 2 cents

1)Master+preview fader like in CDA. This way I can adjust it to be at a level similar to what I have vegas at.
2) Control surface support. With updated automation envelope drawing like in V5.
3)Priority files list...Like the recent files list...Being a priority means that I can dabble and still not have to search for those clients projects in the explorer. The recent list takes a project and shuffles it down if you work on other things. This will be user definable and will not dump any after 9.
How about more than 9?

Right click>recent files>
>Priority files>
----------------
>recent .FRG>
>Priority .FRG>

Since SF7 has Project files now: .frg It would be cool to have a :recent frg project+priority project pulldown lists as well.
4) DAO w/CD text and DVD-A authoring.
5)Update the marker feature like in vegas 5:Ie:marker tool.
6)Pressing #126 on the keyboard moves the cursor to the corresponding marker...etc...
7)Update fader gui to match V5/etc...

THX...
