Subject:MP3's won't play ... why?

Let's see if anyone can deduce a reason for this problem.

I recently had to reinstall my OS on a new drive. So I reinstalled all my SoFo/Sony software into a single Sony folder instead of part Sonic Foundry and part Sony.

Now I can't seem to play back MP3 files within ACID. I can double click, drag-n-drop ... nothing seems to work on them. The actual message it gives me when I double click is
...............................
This file cannot be added to ACID projects. The file type may not be supported. Would you like to open the file using the associated application? [Yes] [No]
...............................

The associated application is iTunes.

Running:
ACID 4.0f
Vegas 5.0b
DVD-A 2.0a
Sound Forge 6.0e
Noise Reduction 2.0b

Ok. I have an update. The file has loaded fine in the past and it loads fine in Vegas now.

But I just tried Sound Forge and neither it or ACID will work with any MP3. In fact Sound Forge won't even recognize them in the file open box if the type "All known media files" is selected. I'm guessing it's a problem with being installed in a non-default folder, but why would that be? Why give an option to pick a new folder if certain plugins aren't going to work?

The Sony/Sofo rename wreaked havoc with all the plugins. Depending on the order in which you installed the products, you will encounter any number of incompatibilities. I had to call Sony and get a patch for Sound Forge 5 in order to get my MP3 support working because I installed Sonic Foundry Sound Forge after the Sony products. (I guess I should have loaded them in the order in which they were released into the marketplace).

Anyway, I would not waste another moment on this yourself. I would call Sony and have them help you sort it out. You may need a patch to get it all working together like I did.

Until then, maybe (if you have high speed internet) you could download all the latest updates of your software and install it in their default paths.
Of course, remove all SoFo/Sony software first.

That’s an option too. Uninstall everything. Delete all directories. I repeat. Delete ALL directories specially any common directories because I have had problems where I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything and it didn't fix the problem because the uninstall left things in the common directories that made the install think the plug-ins were still there when they weren’t. (If you are brave, delete all registry entries too). I recommend making a system restore point before you attempt major surgery like this.

Then as Mario said, reinstall everything into the DEFAULT directories. You can change the drive (C:, D:, E:), but don't change the directory structure. If Sony ACID Pro 4 wants to install into the Sonic Foundry directory you MUST let it. Then install everything in the order in which the were sold (i.e., ACID 4, Sound Forge 6, Noise Reduction 2, Vegas 5, DVDA 2).

Just understand that after doing all that, Sound Forge may still need a patch from Sony to make MP3 show up in the Save as menu (as it was in my case).

Was that patch you refer to not in a normal download section?

No, it was not in a normal download section. I was a patch that a Sony technician had to verify was need and then emailed to you. In my case it was a patch to Sound Forge 5.0 to make it see the MP3 plug-in correctly. I also use ACID Pro 4.0, Vegas 5.0, & DVDA 2.0.

You also might want to try the migration tools that come with the newer sony branded apps, located under the Windows Start menu. Sony>utilities
