Burner won't close after burn (but will otherwise)

Randy Brown wrote on 7/28/2004, 6:47 AM
I'm guessing this has something to do with DVDA 2 since my Sony DRU 500 will open and close fine until after a burn. I have to restart to make it close again. Any thoughts?
TIA,
Randy

Ditto!

I was thinking it was me and the pc.

It will open, I will gently "push" to close and it wont "automatically" reset as with other progs. I can play CDs and I can read and write to this device as for DATA backups - But when I burn DVDA2 stuff .. nope! Now I haven't tried with the latest DVDA2a to check if this HAS been improved. And yes, I need to re-boot to get the drawer to slide back in.

Sony ± R . .. hmmmm .. . :-(

Grazie

This recently started happening with my Sony DRU500 too (after upgrading it to the latest firmware - 2.1a - I'm using DVD1 though - not 2.)
I find if I right click on the DVD drive in explorer, and select eject, the drive will then close correctly when I press the button.

Thanks Greg,
I started this thread over at the Vegas forum. I'm going to copy/paste your post over there too. It seems to me the latest update and DVDA don't get along.
Thanks again,
Randy

I've tried to repro this issue with the DRU-500A and I've had no luck so far. I tested with old firmware (1.0d) and the newest firmware (2.1a). I used -RW and +RW media. Each test, the drive automatically ejected.

What brand and type of media are you using? (+RW, -RW, +R, or -R)
And what OS? (XPsp1 for me)

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. The drive ejects correctly at the end of the burn process, but then won't retract it's loading drawer when touched or the button is pressed. From that point (in my case at least), all open/close requests from the front panel are ignored until I reboot the machine. I've heard that the drawer can still be controlled from software (via Windows Explorer) but I haven't tried that yet. This is using WinXP.

Hey thanks dave...XPsp1 here too. Like Mr. Dude said, no problem ejecting it's the retracting that requires a restart.
Thanks again,
Randy

The Title is, "Burner won't close after burn " . .yeah? Oh. . perhaps THAT is the bug? Perhaps a "Close on Touch" awareness training is required at Sony HQ ? .. ineresting?

I'm in the club too! My darn "drink holder" wont close either at times after a DVDA burn
dru-510a
I still have firmware 1.0a, XPsp1 Home,DVDA 2 had it in DVDA 1 and still there in 2.
Happens intermittantly for me(not every burn) but often.
Reboot is the only way I ve gotten it to close.
the explorer eject does not work for me.
I have Roxio easy cd creator 5 platinum I was wondering if it had to do with the direct cd process running. It's seems to me I remember I got a direct cd error message 1 time before this happened.
may be related, may not be.....just a little extra info.

Maybe we should watch Aaron Littles trailer again and use the sidekick or roundhouse ; )

>>"I still have firmware 1.0a, XPsp1..."<<

Hmmm...then maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the firmware update.

Remember that the 510 came after the 500, so the firmware may be comparable to our updated 500 versions, even though it says it's V1.0.

Just for completeness - my machine never had any adaptec software loaded.
epirb wrote on 7/30/2004, 2:18 PM
Ok maybe its not the Roxio/adaptec software,
Hey Sony Dave? how bout I send you my old 1.8 ghz computer and you send me a shiny new Vio pc 3.any-ghz loaner, and you can run as many tests for as looong as you want? ;0)

BTW i'm using Fuji and Verbatum dvds both -/+ but I dont recall if it occurred on both brands, dont have any projects burnable yet to check.
But I'd be happy to throw in a couple of blanks of each while Ive got my loaner (hehehe)

Yeah, I need to learn to read or something. :)

Still no repro for me.

What type/brand of media are you using?
dvdude wrote on 8/3/2004, 4:10 PM
Mostly Memorex +R 4x, but it happens with everything I've tried including (no offense), SONY + and - R.

I assume that the hardware eject button is disabled under software control during the burn. I'd hazard a guess that DVD-A either isn't sending an "enable" code at the end of the burn or is sending the wrong one. I'm speculating a little here though, I don't work diwn to that level of programming normally.

If the software could monitor the state, then maybe any timing issues are easy to address?

Sony_DaveS wrote on 8/10/2004, 8:52 AM
You'll be happy to know that I was finally able to repro the issue. It does not seem to happen when using -RW/+RW media, only the write once stuff.

The work-around is to use the "Eject" command from "My Computer" - then hitting the button on the front of the drive will close the drive.

We are looking into it. Thanks for the help.

Thank you Sony_DaveS .

How many times did you "need" to repro this? Is it down to the amount of "repeats" of doing something? . . Weirder things have happened!

For the record, I use Philips DVD+RW or Verbatim DVD-R . . . on the Sony DVD RW DW-U14A.

I use Nero or the My Computer or reboot .. thrilling stuff - eh? ;-)

Thanks for the workaround. Sure beats rebooting.
