DVDA2 Only for "Sony" set-tops??

(Has any one tested the DVDA2 Projects with subtitles, on other set-top players than from Sony? like a Philips set-top?)

Hi,

I have made many threads here asking why my DVD's with subtitles created with DVDA 2 don't play on my "Philips DVD 751" Set-top player.
On my Sony set-top it does play.

At first I thought that that it had something to do with my DVDA2 Project.

But I have test burned the " DVD Architect Project for Test Burning"
From the Sony site, and it shows the same problem!

The subtitle does not go further that "going home" music and video plays on.

Am I going to make about 500 copies of my DVDA 2 project
and 80% of my clients have a Philips set-top player.
So if the DVD doesn’t play on set-top’s other than a "Sony player" I am in big trouble!

So I asked the Sony support team.

Have you tried playing " DVD Architect Project for Test Burning” on a Philips set-top player?

[SONY]
No, I haven't. I'll give that a try.
Thanks,

Some days later I asked again:
Have you tested the DVD on a Philips DVD Player?

If so should I wait for a DVDA 2 Update?

Or do you think that this problem will not occur on other Philips DVD Player models?

[Sony]
We currently don't have a Philips DVD player but we are working on getting one. Sorry but it's unlikely a fix for this will make it into the DVDA2 update.

As you see I find this very strange.
I can’t imagine that a big company like Sony does not test its products on other company products.
Anyway I am not getting anywhere with this problem,
I wonder why that the subtitles works on one model and not on other.
I thought that the subtitle system would be a kind of a “Standard”.
Because Philips and Sony has worked together to create the DVD Standard.

Has any one tested the DVDA2 Projects with subtitles, on other set-top players than from Sony? like a Philips set-top?

Thanks,
Vighnesh.

I dont think that 2.0 A version has fixed the problem either.....

But I have test burned the " DVD Architect Project for Test Burning"

Works fine on my Panasonic and JVC players. The subtitles I get are: "I'm goin' home / to see my brother / I'm goin' there / No more to roam / I'm goin' over Jordan / I'm only goin' over home (3 times) / (instrumental)".

Thanks (bStro), But I still would like to hear some one also say "Philips" :-)

Still I find it very strange, why does my "Philips 751" not play the DVDA 2 created subtitle DVD's, and do play the commercial DVD's ?? what is the difference between these two??

Have you tried burning the test project (or one of your own) with a burning program other than DVDA and testing it on your Phillips player? If that one works, then there's probably some conflict between your Phillips player and discs burned with DVDA. If it does not work, then there is probably some conflict between your Phillips player and burned discs in general. Just because your Phillips player plays burned discs doesn't necessarily mean it plays them correctly.

In answer to your question, there are lots of differences between burned DVDs (made by any software) and commercial DVDs. I'm not technical enough to explain the differences to you, but if you search the forum for the term "commercial DVD", you'll find many, many threads on the subject.

I'm having exactly the same problem as v_gts. Tried the test project and my own project (including subtitles) and the subtitles didn't work with my "Philips 711"-Player. No matter which burning program I use. (E.g. in the video of the test project I can only see the first line "I'm going home"). What's wrong here? Maybe Sony should test a philips dvd-player and offer a bugfix for this problem in the near future. (I hope so.)
VMP wrote on 7/4/2004, 11:32 AM
Yes (Homer_Jay), I have also tried burning the DVDA 2 Prepared files with Nero, and still it is the same problem with my "Philips DVD 751".

I wish that Sony made a "DVD Set-tops compatible list" so then I shoud not have spent $799.96 for a not-compatible software.

I have burned six copies. and I am still waiting for a Fix to make the 500 copies.
( I hope a fix comes soon!!)

Sounds to me like there's something wrong with some Phillips players. It's not Sony's responsibility to make their software conform to faulty equipment.

I'll be able to test my dvd on some other Philips set-tops within the next days.
Then I'll tell you about the results.

Thanks (Homer_Jay),
hope to hear from you soon.

In another of v_gts' threads, someone mentioned that they've had siimilar problems with some models of Phillips players, but not all. So results may not be consistent.

Today I tested the dvds on a "Philips 625" and everything worked fine. So I think that the subtitle problem does only exist on "older" Philips models like the 711 or 751.
VMP wrote on 7/6/2004, 7:39 AM
Aha, well let us hope that not many people use those "older" Philips models.

I wonder, say that I give the "prepared DVDA2 " files to a comercial DVD pressing company, and make some pressed copies.

Would the DVD then play correctly on all players?
Or could this problem be in the "DVDA2 prepared " files itself?

And if it is a "Burned Disc reading problem" will this problem also occur with other softwares like say" Adobe encore.."?
Homer_Jay wrote on 7/7/2004, 2:19 AM
This morning I tested my dvds on the Philips 612 (a newer model than the 711) and subtitles didn't work at all.
And there seems to be another problem. When there are subtitles on the dvd on the 711 and the 612 video freezes every 5 minutes for a few seconds. No matter if the subtitles are activated or not. I think it's time for sony to react!!

[ And there seems to be another problem. When there are subtitles on the dvd on the 711 and the 612 video freezes every 5 minutes ]

Yes this is true!!, I had the same problem, also when the player jumps to the next chapter ( by normal playing) the video freezes!

Come on sony!! do something!!

Are you burning "+" or "-"? Sometimes the format will make a difference.
SonySDB wrote on 7/7/2004, 5:56 AM
Homer_Jay, do you have the DVD612(S)/002, DVD612(S)/022, or DVD612(S)/052?

If so, there is a firmware update available for these players which fixes a "play freeze problem with DVD discs". I was unable to find this firmware update on Philips website (i.e. I found it on third-party websites) so, I suggest contacting Philips' customer care for info on obtaining it.

Yes, I also found info that seems to indicate the format (i.e. + or -) may make a difference on these Philips players.

I am using +RW

VMP wrote on 7/7/2004, 8:12 AM
I found alot of firmwares here - http://philips.ianc.net/downloads.shtml
Homer_Jay wrote on 7/7/2004, 8:26 AM
Unfortunately the 612 is not mine and so I won't be able to do a firmwareupgrade. I tried to update my 711, but it's not possible (because the EPROM or something like that has got a kind of protection) and I would have to send the set-top to Philips.
So I'll try some DVD-R instead of DVD+R, may be this will solve the "freeze" problem.
VMP wrote on 7/7/2004, 8:46 AM
I have updated my 'Philips 751' Firmware, but the "subtitle problem' is still there.

Have you tried using "-" media instead of "+" media yet?
