Subject:ACID 5 - when?

I know this might have been asked for a thousand times, but does anybody have ANY idea when and if there will be a ACID 5? I can only pray it can run as Rewire slave otherwise I will not bother upgrading again. It has to run alongside Nuendo2 for me to use it in a professional environment. At the moment I'm forced to use Ableton Live, but I would prefer ACID. |

My guess is summer Namm which means the end of July. But that's not based on any info from Sony, just guesswork. |

No news as to when, but there will be an ACID 5.0. Joel and Peter mentioned development several times before. Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid mD's ACIDplanet Page Guitars 4 Kids |

hopefully it won't crash constantly like the 4.0f seems to be doing on my machine. Although i think .NET is to blame. God damn, why the hell did that have to be required for Vegas 5. |

Believe that Vegas' complex media library capabilities require .NET. I'm actually not having any problems with .NET and ACID 4.0. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling? Iacobus ------- RodelWorks - Original Music for the Unafraid mD's ACIDplanet Page Guitars 4 Kids |

I personally don't like having to install .NET on my DAW. I have the machine set up exactly the way I want with little or no extra services, besides now I have to log on to the machine everytime I start up, not that thats an overwhelming problem, but I should have the choice if I want these services on my machine. |

> besides now I have to log on to the machine everytime I start up Just delete the ASP.NET account and you won’t have to select an account at logon anymore. It's Microsoft's fault. > I should have the choice if I want these services on my machine With all due respect, then I suggest you choose Linux or a Mac. The .NET Framework is Microsoft’s strategic common development platform and will probably ship as a core part of the next version of Windows (read: it gets installed with Windows whether you like it or not). It’s just a matter of time before some application will pre-req it so don’t get mad at Sony for being the first. There will be more. In fact, I would be mad at Sony if they invented their own proprietary way of duplicating what is already shipped as part of the .NET Framework. I applaud Sony for adopting JavaScript as their scripting language and not making up a new proprietary one like Cakewalk and so many other applications have done. The purpose of .NET is to provide a common platform that all applications share. So if you plan to continue to use Windows, get use to .NET and blame Microsoft not Sony. ~jr |

I was at the VASST seminar (for Vegas 5) and during the the Sony Media Showcase the day before, I asked one of the leading Sony development reps there, when we would see ACID 5 and why it was taking so long, almost two years now. He could only tell me, that there would be an ACID 5.0, they are working on it and that they had to shift their primary development focus to getting Vegas 5 out the door by NAB 2004, last April. Now that that is done, he said ACID 5 will be shifting into high gear. But of course, he could not give any further details, other than that. IMO, a key feature ACID 5 needs to have, is ReWire SLAVE capability. Let's face it, most serious DAW users already have a full featured professional multi-tracking audio/MIDI ReWire host app (SONAR, Vegas, Nuendo, SX, Samplitude) and don't really need those same features duplicated in ACID 5 Pro. But, if they could run ACID 5 inside their own preferred host app, as a ReWire SLAVE, and use it's superior loop arranging/mangling capabilities along side their preferred host app, I think ACID Pro sales would go through the roof. For me, I would like to see ACID 5 concentrate on superior ReWire SLAVE protocol capabilities and cutting edge/advanced looping/editing/mangling tools. Even though ACID's Pitch Stretching Algorithm is pretty good, why not improve it even more and make it the best in the business. During the Vegas 5 training, Spot (DSE), demonstrated it's new Pitch Stretch Algorithm. It was quite impressive and smooth when changing the pitch, even by cents, of a track, from the keybaord, on the fly. He said he does not even use AutoTune anymore (he has AT4 for months now and not even touched it) and only uses Vegas 5 for pitch correcting and tuning problems. Hopefully, we will see this new and improved Pitch Stretch Algorithm in ACID 5 too. Billy Buck |

> Let's face it, most serious DAW users already have a full featured professional multi-tracking audio/MIDI ReWire host app (SONAR, Vegas, Nuendo, SX, Samplitude) and don't really need those same features duplicated in ACID 5 Pro. This is probably true, but please allow me to offer an alternate opinion. I play keyboards and I bought ACID Pro 4.0 because the idea composing with MIDI loops intrigued me and I hoped that version 5 would improve on its MIDI capabilities. If Sony’s strategy would require that I purchase SONAR to get that, then why would I buy ACID Pro 5? I would have to use that money to purchase SONAR. What would ACID 5 possibly do that I can’t already do with ACID 4 & Vegas if it doesn’t enhance its MIDI capabilities? They won’t add MIDI to Vegas so why would they drive you to purchase competitive products? It doesn’t make sense to me. You tolerate your competitors, you don’t drive your customers to them! IMHO, ACID Pro 4’s MIDI implementation needs: 1. Metronome 2. Count in (pre-roll) 3. Punch in-out (w/overwrite) Just those three little things would be a tremendous improvement. I personally don’t need all that quantize, swing, etc. junk that SONAR has. I’m a musician. I don’t need crutches. I just need to record what I play without having to constantly delete tracks because of lack of punch-in capability or pre-roll. I have resisted buying SONAR up until now and I hope ACID Pro 5 continues to enhance its MIDI support so that I don’t have to buy SONAR. I already own Vegas and Sound Forge. I just want ACID to complete the trio with better MIDI support. Like I said, they don’t need some elaborate MIDI implementation like SONAR. But they do need to improve the basics a bit. ~jr |

Nothing personal Billy, but a pox on rewire. To me all it imeans is a way to patch in other CPU-hogging software to share sequencing tasks. I don't want to share sequencing tasks. I want my CPU as free as possible to generate music, not run secondary apps. My hope is that AP5 will focus on audio processing and manipulation and be good enough at that job not to force me to use rewire. |

Hi Johnnny,, have you treid P5,, it works well with acid,, It's "live" pattern based sequencing is great,, If you are thinking of expanding your midi capibilites I would recommend P5 or kinetic,,, coupled with Acid ,, you have everything ya need,,,, |

No, I haven’t tried P5 but I see Cakewalk has a trial version so I’m downloading it as we speak. I’ll give it a go. I’d still wait for ACID 5 before deciding where to spend my money but it’s always good to have options. ;-) Thanks, ~jr |
