OT: DV and Virtualdub

Sorry if this question has been answered before. I did a search but got more confused after reading previous answers...

I just download Virtualdub and filters. When trying to open DV file received a message the VD needs codec to input DV.

I found a message that suggested using the Canopus encode only codec.
So my first question is: is this the best choice and will installing this codec effect vegas or possibly other software? I'm would prefer not buying a codec for this if at all possible.
My second question is: It seems like VD is used by many people - how have you worked around the DV codec issue with VD? Running DV thru Vegas and creating a different format file seems like a time waste.
One of the filters I want to use is Deshaker since I couldn't get it to work as a plugin to WAX.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

I can't speak from personal experience, but a lot of people seem happy with the free Panasonic DV Codec.

or you can use the main concept codec ...

I use the Panasonic DV codec with VirtualDub and it works great.

I'll give the Panasonic a try. Hopefully installing it won't have an impact on other codecs used by Vegas.

I assume there is no way to use the Mainconcept one from Vegas to read within VD - Wouldn't have have to buy a codec from Mainconcept to use it with VD?

The MainConcept codec that ships with Vegas is for MPEG1&2 only. Vegas has its own built in DV codec (i.e., it doesn’t use the MainConcept one) I got the Panasonic DV codec with my Panasonic camcorder. The one that’s freely available on the web is actually newer than mine so I upgraded to it. There is no need to buy a DV codec.

the panasonic codec works well and functionally is fine -- but it does have a quality and feature issue compared to the main concept dv codec ..

i guess it boils down to a mater of choice ...

Thanks JR, I'll give the panasonic a shot and see how it works.
