Adat sync problem

Pas wrote on 6/10/2004, 4:29 PM
Hi,
I have Vegas and Yamaha 02R conected to my PC with marian MARC-A ADAT Card. I select in my card "external ADAT sync" for use the same sync from 02R. But In ASIO vegas configuration in can't select external sync, Vegas uses internal ADAT sync and it poduces clics and pops in play and record mode.

Any idea? why can i not use external sync. In cool edit pro I don't have any problem.

thanks

A studio term you may not be familiar with is: "You should always put your sync as close to the oxide as possible..."

What this means is; You should make the medium that you are recording to, the master clock source whenever it is possible.

1. Make Vegas/Marc A the master clock.
open "Marc A settings"/Syncronisation/Playback: Clock From: "Internal Clock"
2. Push the Digital I/O button on the O2R until you see the screen that says: "Word Clock Select"
3. Select "Slot 1" (if this is where your CD8AT ADAT I/O Card is in your O2R), & "Tape 1/2"

This should clock perfectly and never give you any problems.

OT ....A word of caution:

The CD8AT card for the O2R and the O3D Yamaha Consoles does not support bit depths above 20 bit. Do not attempt to bounce any 24 bit tracks from your computer's sound card through your console then back to the application. If you do, you will truncate your audio and seriously degrade its integrity.

I would suggest to record at 16 bit when using the CD8AT and make sure everything is set to this bit depth so you don't have even the potential of any truncation issues.

I'll take a 16 bit multitrack project any day over a 24 bit truncated master.

Yamaha built their ADAT card on the original ADAT protocols which were never expected to exceed 20 bits. The output of AES on the console is 24 bit when the console is set to output at that bit depth. The output of the SPDIF is always 16 bit... Its kind of a quirky design and has caused many problems for many users.

If you want to do 24 bit digital bussing with the Yamaha O2R or the O3D, do not use the CD8AT.

Thanks, but I can not put the internar clock like a master because we have a nanosyncs wordclock generator for all the machines .

Is not posible use external adat sync?

Thanks

So, you didn't completely explain your setup.

You said:
I have Vegas and Yamaha 02R conected to my PC

When your talking about word clock and sync, it's kind of important to include the information about all of the devices that you are trying to sync to and from.

I was under the impression that you were only talking about two devices; an O2R & a PC with Vegas in it.

Even with your latest statement:
we have a nanosyncs wordclock generator for all the machines
"all the machines"; means what? How many machines and what kind of machines are you talking about?

Be specific.

Sorry ,
We have a nanosync wordclock generator for: AKAI DR8 Digital recording.
A Fairlight MFX3 digital recording station,Tascam DAT a aYamaha 02R mixer console, and betacam digital , and SVHS videos reciving Blackburst from nanosync. All machines working with wordclok 44100. We would like use Vegas for recording from Yamaha 02R or from AKAI o Fairlight through yamaha.

I hope that you can help me .

And sorry for my english

We have a nanosync wordclock generator for: AKAI DR8 Digital recording.

Under these circumstances set you Marc-A with the following playback settings:

Syncronisation/uncheck "Card is Master" & make sure that "Internal Clock" matches the sampling frequency as the source
Playback: "ADAT Input Clock"

The rest of the settings will default correctly and will not interfere with word clock.

Hi tmrpro, thanks

Here are the MARC A settings: syncbus: Uncheck "card is a master"

Hi tmrpro, thanks

Here are the MARC A settings:

syncbus: Uncheck "card is a master"

Playback: "ADAT input clock"
Record: "clock from ADAT input"

But when I open VEGAS and open preferences/audio devices/ and select "ASIO marc A" in audio device type, then if I open ADVANCE AUDIO CONFIGURATION vegas have changed the "ASIO clock source " to internal.

Any idea?

Thancks

What version of vegas are you running and I'll see if I can duplicate the problem with my Marc A.

Make sure to include the release, ....like:

4.0a or 4.0b

Thanks

Unfortunately, I was able to duplicate this problem.

I reported it to the development staff for you, PAS.

Vegas does not adjust or change any hardware clock settings. It uses whatever the clock is set to via the software that came with the card. We do not have this hardware in house so we cannot verify this behavior. It could be possible that accessing the ASIO driver could reset the clock settings for the card. This however would be an issue with the driver and thus you would have to contact the manufaturer of your sound card.

Something to try

- Select the MARC A ASIO driver.
- Apply
- Click the Advanced button
- Click the Configure button and set up the hardware clock source.
- Refresh the Advanced page AFTER closing the driver utility
