Can I edit clips destructively?

I just downloaded the trial version of Vegas Video a few days ago.
I am using a Digital8 camcorder to transfer my 8mm and Hi8 tapes to the PC.

I've tried using Scenalyzer to do the optical scene detection and splitting, but there are too many false triggers, so I'm capturing manually.

My question is: how do I delete unwanted material at the beginning of a clip?
I understand how the event timeline works, I understand how subclips work.
What I'm trying to figure out is WHY can't I simply take a clip, highlight the handful of unwanted frames at the beginning, and hit DELETE to make them go away forever?

I understand how nondestructive nonlinear editing works, but I want to be able identify each clip visually by the content of the first frame.

Why can't I crop/trim destructively and be done with it?
