Subject:Stop saving to direct mode

I don't know what I've done but all of a sudden whenever I use "save as" the file closes normal edit mode and opens in direct edit mode. The only way around this is to close SF, delete the sfk file, and then reopen the file normally. But if I copy and paste into a new file it does the same thing. I don't need direct mode and would like to disable it. Can't figure it out tho. v5.0d build 229 Thanks in advance. |

Goto OPTIONS>PREFERENCES. Somewhere in there is a preference setting that you have checked, which says to "open saved files in direct mode." I can't remember exactly where it is, since I no longer have v5.0 installed, but it should be somewhere in the preference settings. |

Thanks for the reply. The only reference to direct mode I could find is on the general tab - there are two direct mode options - open drag and drop sound files in direct mode - open command line sound files in direct mode Neither are checked. I have not changed any preferences. And opening from the command line (open with and send to) works fine. It's only when saving using a new name. Either "save as" on an already saved file or just plain old "save" on a new file. |

Try one of these options. Here's a similar post. http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=3&MessageID=136432 Quote from that post: "The red indicates that the file has been re-opened in Direct mode. This re-open case applies to Save As, not Save, when re-opening in Direct mode is faster than re-creating a temp file. You should be prompted in these cases, but that can be disabled with Options->Preferences->General->"Do not prompt for re-open after save"." |

It would seem I have something unique going on. I searched the forum for quite a while before posting but came up empty. I saw that post and indeed I do have "Do not prompt for re-open after save" checked and, in fact, I don't get prompted - as I should not. It just opens in direct mode. I will continue through the manual and will post back if I find a solution. Thanks for all your time. |

If you check the "Do not prompt for re-open after save" preference and do a Save As, this is the prompt you skip: "The file has been saved as C:\blah.wav. Would you like to re-open the file in Direct Mode (choosing No will re-open the file using a new temporary file)?" And "Yes" is the assumed answer, presumably because it is much faster in 5.0 (depending on the size of the file). If you wish to avoid direct mode, you'll have to disable the pref so you get prompted and can click "No." Alternatively, you could make a backup and just use Save (rather than Save As). <shameless plug> Better yet, download the demo of Sound Forge 7.0 and give it test drive so you get the cool non-destructive engine and don't have to mess with this direct mode stuff at all! </shameless plug> J. |

> If you wish to avoid direct mode, you'll have to disable the pref so you get prompted and can click "No." Did that and it worked, sort of. No more direct mode but the file would still close and reopen. It never did that before. > the demo of Sound Forge 7.0 and give it a test drive Well, I took you up on it and gave it a whirl. I'll have to read up on the features and note the differences between v5 and v7 but first glance only those mouse over color buttons got my attention - can't stand those things. Anyway, here's what I did. Uninstall v5 and the v7 demo. Scoured the windows registry for all trace of either and deleted anything I found. Rebooted then reinstalled v5. I'll know better tomorrow after I create a few new files of any substantial size but so far it looks to have solved the problem. I suspect there's a bug or some other snafu going on in there but since it's two versions behind the current available program I don't suppose there's much to fret over. Thanks for all the input and help. It's a great forum and I'm always glad to return. |

I should have mentioned, it's perfectly safe to keep 5.0 installed while you evaluate the 7.0 demo (or even if you decide to upgrade). J. |
