One reason is because it also tells their competitors what they’re up to BEFORE they are ready to release it. This could give your competition an advantage / jump start on passing you up.

It doesn't seem to be doing Ableton4 any harm !

Also, it can build expectations for something that may not work. What if a planned feature has to be canned. That's worse because you dashed expectations.

well, thats true, but, only the release date? thats not bad if we are clients.
I think.
There are plenty (hundreds) of topics asking for the release date with no results.
Clients always deserve right responses.
I know people waiting and waiting and waiting for acid 5 and fed up with it, they have gone away to another new releases like new audition, wavelab 5, ableton or cakewalk.
If u think, this is the authentic marketing, also known as "if your client feels free to different companies, you don't earn money" or "point of view of the client"

Is the suspense killing all of you?

There can't be a release date until things are finalized. What if they said September and it ends up being October or later? (Answer: Angry users whining they didn't get their new version "as promised.")

Many companies are smart enough to take a "it'll be done when it's done" approach, choosing a tenable time to release a stable product.

Trust me, they're working on 5.0. Peter and Joel have said this many times before.

And, as I said, go right ahead if you feel like migrating to another app like Audition or Live. I'll be here when you come back.

BTW, it is curious that Live would announce all these new features without even a product. That's dangerous because now their competitors know what they're up to. (But then again, not that I actually care what Ableton does...)

You're a hard man mD. Have some pity, people are naturally excited and impatient. It'd worse if no one gave a damn...

And I don't think there's any accepted wisdom on announcing or not announcing - it's just a question of policy.

You could equally well argue that on the strength of the Ableton4 announcement some people will buy version3 to get the v4 discount. That means that perhaps they won't wait or bother with AcidPro5.

And if AcidPro5 comes out with some of the same features as Ableton4 then people will say "Oh, Ableton4 already has that, Sony is playing catch-up." But the truth may be that Sony was doing it anyway.

So it works both ways.

well, they are not so bad at all. Audition is a good choice but it still need better loops integration, its made for videoeditors and multitrack recording, and it has good features that sony doesnt, anyway, i would never go to a different software of acid or sound forge.

Yeah, but what if users end up going with Live 4, then see the new features of ACID Pro 5.0 and like what they see? They end up jumping ship for nothing because they didn't wait.

I'm not trying to be hard—I'm just trying to be realistic. I understand users get itchy and all, but patience is always a virtue in this case.

My advice? If you can actually get things done with what you have now, just wait. Be sure to do your research and never rush into anything you might regret later on.
