Hi all- First post. I am brand new to this. I purchased an Acid/SF bundle this weekend for music production. I will be doing the drum tracks with a Roland kit.
Is there a way of triggering the recorder in SF? There is not a means in Acid. I currently turn it on here at the computer than wak over to the drums and start playing.I then spend quite a bit of time trying to edit out the dead air at the beginning. Any better means of doing this? My problem may lie in the amount of time it takes me to perform a clean edit, but I am surprised I am not finding a way to turn this recorder on when I begin playing...Thanks

In the Method drop-down menu try "Automatic: Threshold". You can set a sound level value rather low, just above the noise floor of your sound card & input chain. Set the release to be long enough to cover any quiet pauses you may have in your performance. Click "Arm". When you start playing Sound Forge will start recording automatically.

Cutting out blank areas at the beginning should be extremely quick. Zoom out far enough to see where the music starts, place the cursor there. Zoom in a few steps so that you can finely position the cursor right to the sample level if you wish. Zoom out again and Shift-click somewhere in the blank area and drag back to the beginning of the file. This will highlight everything up to the cursor. Press Delete.

I do not see a method window. I see Mode and that allows me to select automatic retake, punch in or multiple takes....

Hmmm. I'm sorry. I should have asked which version of Sound Forge you have. The Threshold recording method was probably added in version 7.

His subject line is Sound Forge 7 Basics. Not your fault Kelly. I have 6 so I can't answer, is this the full version? Is this feature only available in the full version?

Ah, that is not the full version of Sound Forge. I suspect this feature is not available in Screenblast (you can do your own research on the features pages).

Your best bet would be to simply highlight the blank space at the beginning and delete then. it should be very painless.

Thanks very much...I am playing along with the loops, sounds fine, then when I play back it is quite out of synch.....this is some pretty tough stuff. But, so were Word and Excel when I got them! All I want to do is make music with me doing the drum work and use the Acid loops for the rest....I will get there...Thanks again, SG

Word and Excel are child's play compared to all things audio and MIDI.

Now that you state your intentions why don't you just set up an audio track in Acid to record your drums against it's output instead of using two apps.

There are MIDI sync possibilities but the above may avoid this.

I'm not the best Acid guy but the little I know should allow this. That said you need to explore your soundcard/MIDI interface and everything you can on audio and MIDI.

A good start would be to absorb your soundcard's manual then Acid's then the Roland manual then SF's and use Google to learn about audio and MIDI.

I just take off the silence in SF then drop the track back into ACID. A handy tip for getting things to sync up in ACID is to zoom in (use the mouse wheel), click on the sample whilst pressing ALT, then you can slide the sample around to sync it up precisely.
