Subject:Completely Separate Tracks...?

This is probably a pretty basic question...... but.....

I want to record new tracks completely separate of the last ones. I also want to monitor the last ones while I record, obviously, so I can get the timing right. I just want to do a basic 2 guitar parts + vocals. But every time I record the second track, it records not only what's coming through the microphone, but everything that is playing on the computer. So since the last track is playing, it re-records it, and that gets loud and obnoxious real quick, and seems to lose sound quality. (It also captures any sounds produced by other programs... beeps and jingles...) So I just want to have completely separate tracks, and I want to record ONLY what is coming through the mic to the new track..... Like I said, this is probably really basic and stupid, but I am frustrated and haven't found it yet... help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on what type of sound card you have but you want to adjust the properties in the Volume utility to only record from the microphone input. Cards from Creative like the SoundBlaster series have a mode called “What you hear” which records everything from every input and output. It sounds like that’s the mode your sound card is in. You need to change it to just record the mic input.

No problem. I wrote a song for my girlfriend once and she became my wife. We used it in the wedding video. (hey, at least it was royalty free) ;-)
