Is is possible to trim/crop an .avi file (NTSC DV format) in Sound Forge without re-compressing the video portion? If I do a Save As on a file that I have trimed, I always get a message indicating that the file was saved in a compressed format and the image quality may have changed. If not, is there a simple (and free) tool that can trim or crop an .avi file without any recompression and the resulting loss of quality? |

Yes, Virtual Dub is exactly what you want and it's free. It will trim your video without any recompression. Also, there are a lot of free third-party plugins available for Virtual Dub that will allow you to do all kinds of video processing tasks, like color correction and video noise reduction. Virtual Dub Web Site You will need to have a DV codec installed on your system in order to view the video in Virtual Dub. The Main Concept DV codec is very good, but costs aroud $50. There are free DV codecs available from Panasonic and Matrox. I don't have the links to those handy right now. John |
