vegas 4/rme digi9636/octaMic D

Hey!
I'm having two problems recording at 24 bit/96 khz through an RME OctaMic D pre-amp, an RME Digi 9636, into my Vegas 4. 1) pops and clicks in tracks 5-8. I have tweaked my XP to the extreme to improve operation. And, 2) overdubbed parts don't sync with the track on playback (they're off just by a fraction of a second). The Vegas manual doesn't offer much in help on setting the latency/buffer settings.
Thanks to anyone with a clue

Welcome to the RME/Vegas problems club

For the most part I get my work done, but the RME stuff is somewhat problematic in vegas.

Im running 2 HDSP 9652's and 3 RME ADI DS's

Something tells me I should learn Samplitude. It came with my RME stuff. Any tricks you'd like to share?

make a totalmix preset with the adat ins set to go straight back out, I mean the top row all set to 0db not -inf, except the spdif

send all the adat outs back to your console, and use the spdif out for the stereo mix, forget trying to use Vegas' input monitoring

what speed hard disk are you running?

DO NOT use the RME stuff in ASIO mode in vegas, set it to MME with at least 23ms buffers

I wonder if I'm the only one having fine results with Vegas4 and RME/ASIO, both on desktop and notebook. I have heard clicks when using input monitoring, but I don't need that function. I'm using the Multiface/Cardbus on notebook, doing live concert recording of 5 channels to attached FireWire drive. So far so good. BTW, Vegas 5 didn't work as well, and I've gone back to 4. Also, this is the first reliable live recording to HD setup I've put together, after trying Digigram VxPocketV2 with SForge, Wavelab, CoolEdit.

FWIW . . probably not much help, since your setup is quite a bit different . .

no, it is a step, we now know of a configuration that seems to work on a laptop. Its probably actually helpful! What setup are you running? P4 laptop?

Ok, the Notebook is Sony PCG-SRX99 on top label, PCG-462L on bottom label, first I noticed the difference . . In the About Computer window, Win XP, Vers. 5.01.2600 (Service Pack 1), Processor Pentium III, GenuineIntel, 1 processor MMX yes, SSE yes, SSE2 no,display 1024x768x16, Memory Physical memory 260.0 MB, paging memory available 771.0 MB. Paging file set to 512-512. As stated in earlier post, I use the RME Multiface with CardBus option. I have set the ASIO latency to 1024 which is one of the options for 32 bit. I have connected a FireWireDirect brand external drive to the ILink port on the left side, and have set that drive as record drive. I've formatted it with largest cluster size, 64K, which I've found creates a much smoother operation than default size. Since the RME cardbus is powered by external 12V SLA, as is the FireWire drive, I get about 3 hours recording on the battery, before it gets down to 10% left.

I just looked at the System Properties to see the CPU speed and I see yet another number, UCG148XEUM, Intel Pentium III Mobile CPU 850 MHz, 287 MHz, 256 MB of RAM. It's running on battery . . I just plugged the charger cord in and the readout now says 496 MHz . . good grief. Next time I set up the full recording system, I'll take another look at it.

I can't think of any thing else I've tweaked, hope this helps.
BTW, the notebook is about a year and a half old, so I'm sure it's no longer available.

Rgds,
Rick Z

Hi Pipe,

I use the Vegas with my Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop (P4M), and a RME HDSP Cardbus + Digiface + ADI8DS, and no problems (Only Firewire HD problems).

I recorded and play up to 23 tracks (24/96) without any drop-out (Limited by the 2,5 HD)

Cheers

have you got Vegas' input monitoring on?

I can do many tracks with no input monitoring, but turning it on kills it
RickZ wrote on 5/31/2004, 2:56 PM
Same here, but with Multiface, the monitor is from the hardware, therefore input monitor by Vegas is not needed.

FWIW, I have a similar problem with RME DIGI96, ASIO to Vegas, input monitoring. In that case as well, I don't need input monitoring, but have noticed clicking problems with it, since it seems to be 'on' by default when one hits the 'Arm' button.
