I have used Sony's Noise reduction software for a couple of years now and have had incredible results. However I have had to use more reduction on a couple of files extracted from cassette tape lately that had an extreme amount of hiss and background noise. The reduction worked good but after applying more NR than I usually have to I noticed that I was getting a flanging effect on the file.

The file is speaking voice only. It is a very poorly recorded seminar. Even with the flanging effect it is much better than original. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a fix for it?

Unfortunately, this is the side effect of overusing the noise reduction plugin. The best thing I found is to turn the "overlap" all the way up, I usually use 88% or 89% then change between the mode settings. I have found either mode 2 and mode 3 gives me the least amount of flanging effect on most material, mileage may vary depending on the material, so try them all and see which sounds the best for you with the least side effects. Also, others have recommended using the Noise reduction in a 2 step method for better results. So in otherwords if you're trying to reduce the noise by 40dB, then you might get better results first reducing it by 20dB, then redoing it by reducing another 20dB.

I usually do the more drastic reductions in steps and it does help. I'll try the settings you suggested. Thanks
