I am not able to get Video Capture to recognize my digital camcorder. My computer will. I can download digital pix from camera to computer, but Video Capture says that there is no divice connected. What am I doing wrong?

What if you start vid capture with the camera OFF, then turn it on after the video capture utility is running?

I have this problem with Vegas (which uses basically the same video capture module). I must start with the camera off, then turn it on after I run the Vid cap module. I am then asked if I want to use this new deivce.

2 questions, please - how are you downloading the pictures, and what sort of camera is it?

Thnaks for all the replies. I am using JVC GR-D70U digital camcorder. I am able to download pix to Windows Media Player. I understand that maybe I need I-Link to download video. What do you think?

Des,
Thanks for the reply. I am using USB as that is what instructions said to use. Have never used firewire before. Inform me. Also, I think I may need I-Link. What are your thoughts.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried your suggestion to no avail. What do you think if I get I-Link?

The JVC GR-D70U can use a card to hold stills separately - I expect that's what the USB interface is for. I-link and firewire are the same thing and are pretty much a necessity for downloading movies. The good news is that they're cheap ($20 or so), readily available and easy to install.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling from what I have read and heard that I-Link or Firewire would solve the problem. I appreciate the input.

I have never used I-Link or Firewire before. Do they connect to the USB ports on the camera and coumputer? I am somewhat igorant of these things and could use some good input.

I don't know about good, but....

You need to buy a firewire card and a firewire cable - they're probably sold together, but it's best to make sure! The card is fitted into the PC like any other card. Some PCs have a firewire socket on the front of the case for convenience, so there's another socket on the card for this, separate from the others. You can ignore it if you don't need it, or plug it in if you do - it'll work either way. The cable has a large and a small plug - the large one plugs into the firewire card in the computer, the small one into the camera.

One other thing - the firewire card will probably have a number of sockets. It doesn't matter which one you use.

Good luck!
