DVDA - Why AC3?

Grazie wrote on 5/14/2004, 11:33 AM
I'm new to this - but could somebody please tell me?

I've just completed a series of tests today with the same content on 2 projects.

One project 23 mins the other . .2:30 mins

I tried Mainconcept DVD PAL for each - this'll be the combine Video and AUdio template. Then I repeated this using the DVDA separate Video and then rendering AC3. The only differnce I could tell was that AC3 sound . .well a bit "closed-off" the Mainconcept spounded beautifully open . . am I correct in this?

Grazie

Did you set the "Line Mode Profile" and the "RF Mode Profile" to
none in the AC-3 extended settings? This standard "feature"
screws up the volume and dynamic range of the resulting
bitstream.

. . oh . . I must say I really don't understnad the basics of which you speak .. having said that - potatohphysics [ ?] - I'll give it a go and feedback to you.

. . and you haven't told me why do it? Why do AC3? Yes I'll do what you say and compare the results.

Best regards,

Well, I've done what you advised. I just burnt a DVD and played it. I had both files on my Menu - separate AC3 and non-separate. I can't tell the difference. Does AC3 make for a "smaller" format?

AC-3 is the standard for NTSC DVD. You can use MPEG audio, but it's not the standard and may not be supported by your (NTSC) DVD player - though all of the DVD players I have do play MPEG audio encoded discs. The other standard for NTSC audio is LPCM, which takes up a lot more space on the disc.

The advantages of using AC-3 audio are 1) Leaves more disc space for video, and 2) Allows surround soundtracks. (I'm not sure if it's possible to have a 5.1 LPCM encoded soundtrack - althought it would take up HUGE amounts of disc space)

Thanks. That's what I wanted to hear:

1 - AC3 is smaller, hence leaviing more space for the video to fill the DVD

2 - AC3 is the only way I'm going to get surround sound.

. . got it ! Good!

Thank you,

Grazie I have used it on my projects for some time now, not had any compatibility issues with clients, The best bit it is allows for more space for the video.
