All three here - and am very happy to have all three since I think they're well defined separate apps.

I own all three. I use SF and ACID quite a bit...Vegas, rarely as the features I use (single -track recording, nudging, chopper, rewire, the looping, VSTis, explorer playing loops to tempo, etc.) are present in ACID or work kinda weird in Vegas (i.e., the grid division, the looping in conjuction w/ the grid, etc.). Even though it is more than capable, I find Vegas to be more focused toward video users who have some audio needs. The audio features are not as pointed and defined, IMO, as a dedicated audio program (i.e. Sonar, Nuendo, Pro Tools, etc). Not saying one is better than the other, 'cuz Vegas rocks... it's just that ACID and SF have me covered in the areas I use them for.

Own ACID (Pro 4.0) and Sound Forge (7.0) here. Don't own Vegas (yet) because I don't have an immediate need for multitracking (it's just me here), plus I'd like to win it (via an ACIDplanet contest) instead of buying it. (I'm so freakin' cheap.)

I must have Sound Forge for its editing/mastering capabilities for projects created in ACID Pro.

I use ACID Pro 4.0f for my loop-based music. I think it's absolutely great...though that "freeze & fuzz" does grate at my nerves.

I also use Sound Forge 6.0e, but only to convert audio files from one format to another.

My multitrack/editing DAW of choice is SAWStudio [www.sawstudio.com], which is why I have no need for Vegas (or for SF in this regard). It does what Pro Tools does, as well as a number of things Pro Tools can't, without all that expensive hardware (that's the kicker!). It's like being at a Neve console...but all in the software domain (though you can use, say, an external fader pack if you feel you must). My only caveat: No TDM plug-ins, as in Pro Tools...then again, that goes for all other DAWs, afaik. Not a big deal...SAWStudio has some great plug-ins, and there's a lot of plug-in and soft·synth support out there (e.g., Waves, Spectrasonics...). Also, an integrated video editing suite is on the horizon.

Er, sorry...uh, on which forum am I again...? Seriously, though, I have yet to come across a "one-stop-shop" for all of my audio and musical needs...I mean, as much as I love SAWStudio, I wouldn't use it for my loop-based music...can't beat ACID. Also, I use Sony [Sonic Foundry] Noise Reduction 2.0a quite a bit, as well as Arboretum's Ray Gun 2.0. My point: Different strokes for different folks...different tools (and, 99∙44/100% of the time, different companies/manufacturers/vendors) for different applications. I took a look at a number of apps before going with SAWStudio; I also did my homework before I made my [correct] decision to add ACID to my arsenal...and so on.

Bottom line, to make a short story long: Nothing beats ACID for loop-based music. Dat'z wut I use. [Hey, you wanted to know, right? ;) ]

Best regards,

Mike E. Dee

I use Acid and Sound forge. I've just transitioned to using Acid as the heart of my setup. In Acid I use probably every feature. I'm recording VST instruments and doing midi editing. I use beatmapper at times and DX plug ins all the time. I sync my keyboard to Acid, when I have what I want I record the keyboard part into Acid or Sound Forge. Sound Forge is my audio swiss army knife. I"m constantly bring loops in and out of Acid for editing.

I don't use Vegas, I may in the futre for DVD video authoring.

I’m both a musician (I play keyboards) and a videographer. I as a musician, I use ACID Pro 4.0e to compose music that is a combination of audio loops and original MIDI tracks/loops that I play/create using VSTi soft synths. I have extensive outboard MIDI gear but I only use it to perform live. All of my recordings are done with soft synths right in ACID. I purchased ACID Pro 4 over SONAR 3 because I like the looped base approach to composition and nothing does loops better than ACID. It’s just me composing so I really don’t need multi-track recording (although I could always do that in Vegas)

With that background in mind, here are the answers to your questions:

Who that own ACID also use/own Vegas?

I own Vegas 5+DVD. I use ACID to create sound tracks for my video work in Vegas. I use Vegas for both video and audio work.

Who that own ACID also use/own Sound Forge?

I also own Sound Forge 5.0f. (there was nothing new in 6 or 7 that I needed) I use Sound Forge to make ACIDize Loops from WAV files that don’t have ACID information. I use it to build Loops for use in VSTi samplers (i.e, to construct sampled instruments from raw WAV files with the correct root key and cross fade/loop points). I also use it to clean up audio from my video recordings.

Acid Pro 4.0
Sound Forge 6.0
Vegas 4+DVD

Acid Pro, obviously for creating songs from loops. I'm a lousy musician! :-(
Sound Forge for editing. I haven't gone into great depths with SF yet...just light tweaking so far.
Vegas for photo montages mixed with audio. Also my prefered app for CD compilations.

I'm hoping to get alot more use out of my apps in the next while.

For us here
Acid 4 is a must its my main creation tool!
Sound Forge 7.0 is a audio Swiss army knife
CDA5 for every audio CD.

I would probably use Vegas 5 more if It had OMF and AAF to import other type of audio sessions form Pro-Tools, Steinberg, Sonar 3 and Logic.

Yes, I use Sound Forge, although only for simple tihngs like reversing a sample as I prefer to use Samplitude for serious editing.
No, I don't use Vegas - if I wanted multi-track recording I'd use Samplitude or Cubase SX depending on the purpose.

Greetings Peter et al,

I own/use Acid Pro 4.0f and Sound Forge 6.0e.

As others have said, Acid is mainly used for compositional work (not that I consider myself a composer nor, indeed, a musician of any kind) and I take advantage of it's DXi, VSTi and ReWire support for this. I also use it to record audio (mainly vocals - usually not mine) and MIDI tracks, which can be used in any app that supports .wav &/or .mid files (of course). However, Acid itself tends to be the start, middle and end of most of my projects simply because it's so easy to use and very versatile with it.

Sound Forge hardly gets used (especially in comparison to Acid) but it does have its uses. However, I'm not (yet) an audio professional and I don't 'master' any of my tracks so it may well get used a lot more in the future once I've built up my studio (and my reputation).

I've been considering purchasing Vegas (and SX, Sonar, Nuendo, Samplitude and PTLE) but I still haven't made up my mind yet. Every app has its pros and cons, and if I ever do venture down the semi-pro/pro route I'll need to take certain things into consideration, e.g. compatibility with other studios/projects, appeal (marketing) to clients/potential clients, product stability (the last thing you need is a crash in the middle of a paid session), etc.

Hope that covers the info you're after.

I don't use Acid with Vegas.
Cuz Vegas isn't an audio dedicated multitracker.
Cuz Acid has all I need except what we asked for in the "AP5 Feature Request" Post.

I use Acid & Sound Forge
Because I can use the same processing chains in both progs. Because I finalize the sound on Sound Forge to free some CPU in Acid (to free the Master Compressor & Maximizer, etc...).

i use wavelab instead of sound forge because of the meters.

im thinking of upgrading to cda 5.0

I use Acid 4.0 (eagerly awaiting 5.0 here! :o)). I use Sound Forge almost every time I use Acid. I make most of my loops in Sound Forge (I like Chopper, but I just like Sound Forge better--no specific reason). I run almost every loop I make through the Normalizer and Wave Hammer plugins to make them punch harder, and I master finished products in SoFo as well (on the rare occasion that I finish a track). I have an old version of Vegas (2 or 3--I can't remember off hand), but I don't use it often. Sometimes I'll use it for layering sound to make new samples, but I realize that's not the usual use for Vegas.

Peace.

Acid 4.0f and SF 5.0f. These are must haves for me! As for Vegas, I use the LE version that came with my SF, but I would like to use Vegas ONLY because it supports higher resolution files and formats. The problem for me with Vegas is $$$$$. I NEVR do ANY video editing, so if we can make request here.....it would be GREAT if a stripped down audio only version of Vegas was offered for a few$$$$ less, THEN if we needed to do video editing , purchase an upgrade. But, not to beat a dead horse, it would be really great to have Acid and Vegas (audio only)combined for the absolute end all work environment(as long as the midi implementation was at least as good as Sonar, which I do not use but I have demoed.) Oh well, just thought I might ask one more time. Luces

All three here. Vegas 5 primarily for video. Use Acid to score production videos & radio stuff. Use Sound Forge to clean up audio & edit/acidize both loops for our productions and for our loop library titles we retail.

Vegas 5 is a good multitracker. But not audio dedicated. I mean, what about VSTi Support ?

Anyway I saw the "what's new" document. Seems like we've been heard over here (cf. "AP5 Features Request" Post). That's good to know. I'm sure Acid will be all we need.

Ow and about the Bus to Bus routing... Great job ! I forgot to mention that one in the requests. Bravo !

Acid Pro 3.0g & 4.0f prefer 3
Sound Forge 5.0f

Acid 3 is solid as a rock.
Sound Forge 5 works just fine.
Don't own Vegas Multitracking is done with Cubase SX 2.0, Nuendo 2.0 or Sonar 3 Producers Edition

also forge 7 upgrade but not going to try to integrate it yet with acid until 5

use acid for compositing and midi score for basic video track matching to sound beds

forge for trims, edits and cleanup

I use Soundforge 7 and Acid 4 for all of my music production work. I would really like to get into Vegas 5 for its multitracking, on the fly punch ins, and control surface capability, but its not worth it to me to spend the type of money that Vegas costs for those features at this point in time. The time for me to completely jump into the lap of Vegas would be when (if) Vegas ever gets an industry standard type of midi engine (not like Acid's....more like a Cubase or Sonar since Vegas does not have to work with Acid's looping rules). Then, it would be a perfect DAW for me and would fullfill my needs to the fullest (especially since Vegas 5 has implemented a form of "loop" capablility which I plan on checking out fully by trying out the demo).

One, because I use Avid (I'm a professional video editor) and two, I have only very basic audio editing needs which can be met by less costly products than Sound Forge.

"Vegas 5 is a good multitracker. But not audio dedicated. I mean, what about VSTi Support ?"

Not to be too pedantic, but Vegas is audio dedicated - what it isn't is MIDI capable, there's a difference and that's where Acid comes in to play.

However, like most (though not all) SonyFo products users, I too would love an all-in-one solution (a la Sonar, SX, etc.). After all, if you were to purchase Acid, C D Architect, Sound Forge and Vegas you will have spent a lot of money - probably more than if you purchased, for example, Nuendo, which (almost) does all of what these four separate apps do in one go with the added benefit of only needing to upgrade/update once (instead of four times), if you see what I mean.

with all its ideas, Sony must understand qu'il has a problem there; it is at least necessary to integrate the multi track in acid. vegas is video more specialized, for the musicians now.

I design and produce video, and normally score each of my productions. Now I own both Acid 4 and Vegas 5 (+DVD). I started with Acid 2. When the AC3 plug-in was released for Acid 3(?), I bought it. Then I got an offer from SF to "upgrade" to Vegas+DVD for like $199. (an absolute STEAL!!!), since I recently purchased the AC3 plug-in. Acid and Vegas compliment each other very nicely. And the learning curve for Vegas was a no-brainer, since I was already proficient with Acid.

I do NOT use Sound Forge. Instead, I use Wavelab4. I also use Cubase SX, but MOST of my composing is done in Acid, then mastered in Wavelab4. I don't see any reason to go with Sound Forge, especially with Wavelab5 imminent. If Sony had a "competitive upgrade" price of like $99. for Sound Forge, I MIGHT consider it.

> If Sony had a "competitive upgrade" price of like $99. for Sound Forge, I MIGHT consider it.

I mentioned this is another post. It’s funny that Sony expects us to buy these three products but doesn’t give us any cross product upgrades (just same product upgrades). Forget about competitive upgrades, I like to see ACID customers get a discount on buying Sound Forge and Vegas and visa versa.

I agree with you. Where’s the incentive to buy Sound Forge over WaveLab? Ulead does this for their product line. Or even bundle the suite at a discount like Adobe Video Collection. It would be one thing if these were unrelated products, but Sony keeps certain features out of each one so that you need them all. You could at least reward us for being loyal customers. (I already own all three so its too late for me) ;-)

Call it a "loyalty upgrade". It's a great idea, and it WORKS! For me, there is NO REASON to buy Sound Forge, especially with Wavelab 5 coming out soon.

Steinberg did the competitive upgrade thing with Cubase SX, going after Logic users. Steinberg is smart that way. And now that they're owned by Pinnacle, expect to see more!

Are you listening, Sony???

Hey Peter,

I use Acid, Vegas, Sound Forge & DVD Architect. I've purchased them in this order: Sound Forge, Acid, Vegas+DVD Architect & here's why:
I'm a musician, I work mostly with FL Studio, so I needed Sound Forge to tweak, edit, strip/cut/mangle my samples. I grabbed Acid Pro - to arrange some of the tracks that I pump out of FL Studio. The product goes back into Sound Forge for mastering, and then ends up in Vegas as a music score for a video. The video, after is either dumped to my MiniDV camcorder, or to a DVD via DVD Architect.

All are unique, all fullfill a particular purpose, the only one that is increasingly collecting dust most of all is Acid, since FL Studio grew out of just being a looping tool that creates Acidized loops, more into a full arrangement tool.

I use Vegas5. I edit 8 to 14 audio tracks on it. I was trying to learn pro tools but once Vegas 5 came out with the surface control feature, I'm giving up on pro tools. I use the Waves plugs so I can pretty much do everything including "seat of the pants" mastering on Vegas.

I have the Sound Forge 6 (?) its the one before non-destructive editing. I never upgraded cause Vegas does the job for me.

I need to learn ACID. I need royalty free music. So I'm thinking of buying the new VASST book on ACID. But I'm not looking forward to learning.

i use acid4 pretty much every day and have used it for years.

the only thing vegas does that i sorta need is the ability to record more than a single 2-track file at a time, but vegas is not worth the cost for me for that alone. i currently use a portable hardware recorder when i need to pull multiple tracks instead (primarily when doing field recording of bands), and then export them to my pc.

i use cooledit instead of sound forge. i just liked the interface better at first (we're talking like 6 or 7 years ago) mostly for like the shortcuts for easy locating of zerocrossings and snapping to those points.. and then it was a long time before soundforge ever went past 16-bit support so it just never seemed like it would do everything i needed. i haven't investigated any of the newer versions features in a loong time since i can pretty much accomplish everything i need at the moment.

Acid is.. my paintbrush and palette of colors for creating my music composition, and Q-base is the canvas on which it is finalized, Wave lab or adobe audition is where I master the project on to disk,,, I have ,,but don't use sound forge because it's not a multi track audio editor, I use vegas in the same manner as Acid but for video, I don't use vegas for music composition,at all, because for me, it's not as intuitive and only offers half of what q-base offers .. I'll only import the master of a music composition into vegas working along with the video(as a guideline),,,,, Acid -re-wired with vegas would make a hot item in my opinion,, Acid is, by far the most intuitive program (for music) and like wise,,vegas,,( for video),,,,
