Can end actions and subtitles be grouped and changed all at once?

johnmeyer wrote on 4/24/2004, 12:38 PM
I have twenty-four music videos in separate MPEG2 files. I want them to play one right after the other. End actions now let me do this. However, I have to go to each video and specify the end action. There doesn't seem to be any way to select multiple items and simultaneously apply the same property to each item (i.e., a "play next file in menu order" action). This seems to obvious a need to have been overlooked, so I must just be missing something.

Am I missing something? Since DVDA2 now uses this property sheet metaphor, I kind of expected to be able to do this, not just for end actions, but for most other things as well.

Also, if I want to enlarge the font for subtitles, is there a quick way to do that globally? I can select each subtitle on the preview screen and change the text size, color, etc., but this is going to be painful on a large project. There must be a way to do this faster.

You can do it the same way as in DVDA 1 ; drop them in as a Music Compilation.

If I do this, can I then add menus & navigation? I used Music Compilation in DVDA1 a few times to get around some of its limitations, but in version 1, you coudn't later add menus. I assume this is still true in version 2, and if so, this method won't work (I want/need menus and navigation).

You didn't mention that.
No, I don't see a quick way to do that, though setting end actions for each button is on;y a few clicks.

You can have menus & navigation with music compilations. Starting with a menu-based project and you can add a music compilation (Insert | Music Compilation). BTW, this was also possible with 1.0. Maybe, I don't understand what you're trying to do.

To do this for every subtitle on the subtitle track:

1. Select the first subtitle on the subtitle track.
2. Change its font, size, color, etc.
3. Right-click on the subtitle in the subtitle track.
4. Select the "apply attributes to entire track" (or something like that; I'm at work, and can't check).

That should apply the settings globally. I had to do that on a recent project because the 14-point non-bold Arial font was too bloody small to see on a TV.

(What's really needed now for subtitles is the ability to set default subtitle attributes, applicable to all new projects. Hello, Sony???)

Bingo! Thanks MJPollard, I overlooked that item on the right-click menu.

SonySDB,

I just created a quick test using Music Compilation, and this looks like it is going to do exactly what I want. Thank you!!

Your comment that this has been there all long (since version 1.0) really puzzles me, however.

First, on page 24 of the Version 2.0 manual, it states: "Music compilations contain no menus, but users can skip forward and backward through audio tracks using their DVD remote control."

This is what I remembered reading, both in version 1.0 and in this version. I don't have 1.0c installed anymore, but I am pretty sure it didn't allow this (menus with music compilations).

Second, the music compilation with menus appears to do something that I have been asking for, and which is extremely important. You need to be much more explicit about this feature in your marketing literature, because lots of other people were asking for it. In short:

Music compilation with menus lets you combine individual MPEG files from into one seemless VOB file.

Next to end actions, multiple audio tracks, and subtitles, I think this new feature has the most far-reaching implications about what you can do with DVDA. In particular, it lets you create a workflow where you can create MPEG/AC3 files in small chunks (they are much easier to store) and then assemble them in DVDA without being forced to have them created in separate titlesets (which most players cannot play without pausing at the end of each titleset).

Thus, you might want to get you documentation people to make fix the documentation flaw I noted above. (I just checked the Help file, and it does not contain the erroneous statements about no menus in a music compilation.) Also, you might want to tell your marketing people to add the implications of this feature to their new features/benefits listing. It is not highlighted in the "What's New" section in the help file.

Thanks again for pointing this out. This feature is a huge deal for me.

I'll make documentation aware that the statement in the manual is a source of confusion.

FYI, the transition between songs (or videos) in a music compilation is not seamless.

Hmm. I haven't burned a DVD and tried it on my set top player. It seemed seemless (if that doesn't sound too odd), in WinDVD, but this program also doesn't hesitate when going between titlesets.

Also, I asked in another thread, but I'll ask again here, is there a way to add chapter stops within an item in a music compilation? If not, could this be added in the future?
SonySDB wrote on 4/26/2004, 12:56 PM
There is no way to add or remove chapter points from a music compilation. I cannot comment on what will or will not be in future versions.

You might want to submit a product suggestion (via Help | Sony on the Web | Give Us Feedback).
