Been having a problem since my effects for Sound Forge 6 got updated to Sony versions. The presets seem to corrupt as soon as I save them now. Did an uninstall, disk and registry cleanup, and reinstall of SF6e and they went back to the old Sonic Foundry logos. But as soon as I installed SF7a, all the logos change to Sony and they're messed up again. Both in SF6 and SF7. The effects seem to work but the legends read as garbage if I change any settings.

Make sure you do not install Sound Forge 7.0 in a Sonic Foundry folder; leave it in a parent Sony folder instead.

Try uninstalling all versions of SF and installing only 7.0 as well.

Thanks. Tried uninstalling all Sony and Sound Forge products followed by an SF7 install. No go. There seems to be an issue now with DirectShow on XP. Just noticed that the Multi-Band dynamics capture threshold is broken too. Looks like I have to stay with SF6e till they figure it out. Too bad. I liked Vegas 4+DVD and the new v5 looked interesting. But audio editing's my bread and butter.

Just tried a fresh SF7 install to a brand new machine. Same deal.

Here's the registry entry SF7 makes when saving a Graphic EQ preset:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DirectShow\Presets\{F3B8E880-B4E0-11D0-AEBC-00A0C9053912}]
"3:1 compression starting at -8 dB"=hex:b8,00,00,00,a2,33,71,5f,34,9a,2e,4e,a7, bd,b6,2a,4a,9d,d5,f5,00,00,00,00,0a,00,00,00,88,13,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00, 00,00,b8,fc,ff,ff,b8,fc,ff,ff,b0,ff,ff,ff,b0,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,cb,ff,ff, ff,1d,5d,d4,77,3a,02,10,00,35,01,00,00,3b,04,01,1b,50,02,0f,00,14,f5,12,00, 7e,c5,d4,77,68,08,c3,00,35,01,00,00,3b,04,01,1b,50,02,0f,00,00,00,00,00,a0, f5,12,00,d4,c6,d4,77,00,00,00,00,15,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,dc,f6,12,00,d4,c6, d4,77,3a,02,10,00,58,f5,12,00,f5,c6,d4,77,5a,00,10,01,35,01,00,00,3b,04,01, 1b,50,02,0f,00,03,00,00,00,50,3a,d4,77,3a,02,10,00,00,00,00,00

In contrast, here's what 6e creates with identical parameters:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DirectShow\Presets\{F3B8E880-B4E0-11D0-AEBC-00A0C9053912}]
"3:1 compression starting at -8 dB"=hex:b4,00,00,00,83,e8,b8,f3,e0,b4,d0,11,ae, bc,00,a0,c9,05,39,12,00,00,00,00,0a,00,00,00,88,13,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00, 00,00,b8,fc,ff,ff,b8,fc,ff,ff,b0,ff,ff,ff,b0,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,cb,ff,ff, ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,b0,ff,ff,ff,1e,00,00,00

They're not even close. And if I replace the registry entry on the 7a machine with the 6e one above... it works.

Can you clarify what you mean by "the legends read as garbage"? And what exactly happens when it "doesn't work"? Please be as specific as possible. Have you contacted tech support? This sounds very strange.

Thanks for the followup.

Yes, I sent an e-mail to Customer Support. Haven't heard from them yet.

I think the problem started when I loaded an update to a SF product shortly after the Sony aquisition. It was probably a Vegas 4, DVD Arch, or maybe a CD Arch update. It changed all effects plugins to Sony but did not create any Sony directory tree in Program Files. But I did come up with my own work around yesterday. This consists of uninstalling SF6e, deleting all the files in "C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\Audio", deleting every registry key making reference to that directory, and then re-installing SF6e. This restores all effects logos to "Sonic Foundry", cures the garbage legend problem when saving presets, and makes the multi-band dynamics level detection work again.

SF7a suffers from the same behavior, even though it creates a Sony directory tree in Program Files with it's own "Shared Plug-Ins/Audio" directory. Once you install it, SF6e will use the Sony plugins instead of it's own. Although I was only looking at SF7a as an upgrade possibility, on the theory it might cure the problem. It didn't. But I came up with a work around for that too. Just copy all the files from the Sonic Foundry "Shared Plug-Ins/Audio" directory to the Sony one. It overwrites all but the new vinyl restoration plugin (which doesn't suffer from the defect anyway). Don't know if this will break anything else but it does seem to make the plugins work in SF6e and SF7a again.

Looking for a detailed description of "garbage"? It's a lot like the legal definition of pornography: hard to describe but you'll know it when you see it. You can load the registry entry from my previous post, pull up the Graphics Dynamics effect, select the "3:1 Compression at -8db" preset and see for yourself. The preset seems to work but the gargage values displayed make using it a little unsettling, to say the least. The garbage values also get displayed the next time you run the preset if you change any settings. So you wouldn't want to do a repeat usage unless you have a good memory and a lot of faith.
