Subject:selecting PART of a track

I am trying to select only a small bit of a drum break to copy and then paste elsewhere. All that happens is that the ENTIRE drum loop is highlighted instead of the small portion that I need. I do not want to use the chopper.

I just want to highlight a small portion of a sample. What am I not doing? Thank you

You have to use the Chopper.

Is there a reason why you don't want to use the Chopper? Is it cumbersome to you for some reason?

If you want to take that piece of the loop and place it in its own track, you have to make it into it's own file. If that is the case, then mD is right. However, there is a workaround. Right-click on the track (to the left, where the volume slider is) and select "duplicate track". Now you have the same loop on 2 tracks. Now, take that duplicated loop and put your cursor at the beginning of the part you want to isolate and hit the s key. This will slice the loop at that point. Now put your cursor at the end of the part to isolate and hit s again. Now highlight the part of the loop before the slice and hit delete. Do the same with the part of the loop after the slice. Now you should have a track with JUST the isolated part. DO NOT use the paintbrush on that track, or it will re-paint the entire loop. To put the (now isolated) part wherever you want it, just highlight it, copy, and paste it where you need it (only on that duplicated track--you can't place it on any other track unless you want to duplicate the duplicated track again). Trust me--this works (I've done it a thousand times) and it doesn't take NEAR as long to do it as it takes to read this! I hope I explained this okay. FYI (free tip here) you can also do this with MIDI tracks. :o) Hope this works for you.

Peace.

yeah Don, its all about the S. Slice. Choppers OK but you have to make a new track. I just want to chop parts of breaks and paste them around the little Acid Pro world, hehehehe. Anyway thanks a lot. that does it. cheers

You don't have to make a new track with chopper, just highlight the part you want and click insert.

Like JTXX said, once you make a selection in the Chopper, you can click the "Insert" button to insert only that selection onto the timeline. (A or foward slash (/) are the keyboard shortcuts.)

Be sure to place the cursor where you want the chopped section to appear on the timeline beforehand.

Don't forget there are tons of ways to work with events once you have them the way you want them, including bouncing down (CTRL+M) and paste repeat (CTRL+B).
