Subject:Vegas 5 ready to go, but no Acid ?

It's a shame, but also an indication of priorities, that Vegas 5 is ready to ship yet there's no sign of a new Acid.

So Acid sits on version 4 with no news at all of any development, but Vegas has moved ahead TWO full versions in the same period.

Seems obvious what Sony's interested in here....

I wonder what sort of resources Acid development is getting - if anything.

I would not expect to see ACID 5 until mid to late summer at the earliest. SONY will need to give Vegas 5 at least 3-4 months face time and promotion before they release another flagship product. Don't need another company product stealing it's thunder. If you look at past history there is always 3-6 months, at least, separation between the releases of Vegas, Sound Forge & ACID. I am getting tired of looking at that same old SF7 promo on the SONY MediaSoftware main webpage for the last 8 months. You would think SONY would change it up every now and then to keep it from getting stale and stagnant. We will probably view the new Vegas 5 promo on the main webpage until the end of summer. By then it will be time for ACID 5. But then again, I could be all wrong :)

I'm eagerly awaiting Acid 5.0 myself, and the thought of it not being out until the end of the summer is EXTREMELY disappointing. All I can say is that if it takes Sony/SoFo over TWO YEARS to update Acid, 5.0 better be the absolute be-all, end-all product we've been hoping for, and then some. However, where can I find information on Vegas 5.0? Everything on the Vegas product page is about 4.0. Can anyone give me a link to look at for Vegas 5.0? Thanks.

There isn't too much, other than an announcement and a rebate on Vegas 4.0/free upgrade to Vegas 5.0.

I hope that they do a similar thing as Apple and allow screenblast acid to use midi instruments like garadgeband does. That would make the upgrade nice for us po' folk.

Here's a quote from the announcement mD linked to above:
"This version will establish Vegas as the premier application for professional media production," said Bob Ott, vice president of Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Production Systems Division.

Even though Mr Ott must have said that sort of tongue in cheek, it is obvious who Sony has targeted as Vegas' main competitor. It also shows that that they are not afraid of it.

(By the way, my name is Tor. I'm from Norway. I usually post over at the Vegas (video) forum. These days I am thinking about buying Acid - and so I'm reading what you people have to say.)

Hey Tor,

The more interesting thing from that announcement for us Vegas users is:

Loops for ACID ™ "loop property" recognition

I just purchase ACID Pro 4 to create music beds for my videos (I also have Vegas) and do some original compositions (I’m also a musician) and it looks like Vegas 5 will allow you to drop ACID Loops on an audio track and be able to control the tempo and key (at least that would be my guess) so it will be interesting to see how much you will be able to do with ACID loops in Vegas 5. I still need ACID to create original loops from MIDI/VSTi so I’m glad I got ACID but I’m looking forward to use these two apps more closely together in the future.

Intelligent move don't you think?
The've just opened a new market for Acid loop libraries.

If they can have looping in Vegas why can't they have multi track recording in Acid?

> why can't they have multi track recording in Acid?

Are you talking about recording multiple tracks simultaneously? (because you can already record multiple tracks one at a time). I would be happy if I could simply re-record a single track in ACID. Maybe you can and I just don’t know it yet, but there is no record button on an ACID track like in Vegas so every time you press the main record button it records a new track. Right now, if I want to re-record a track, I have to delete the track and record a new one.

ACID is definitely at an awkward stage right now. A supreme looper but a mediocre audio recorder. Sony compares it to SONAR on their web site yet it doesn’t have a fraction of the MIDI capabilities that SONAR has or the audio multi-track capabilities that SONAR has so the comparison is really, really, really, deceiving. They are comparing everything ACID does (i.e., looping) so one small thing SONAR does. I agree they should turn it into a full-blown multi-track, lopping, MIDI, thing-a-ma-jig and really replace the need for SONAR.

That's because ACID is a loop sequencing tool as you've noted, not a true multitracker like Vegas is.

As far as SONAR goes, it's true that Sony makes comparisons between it and ACID. But then again ACID is different things to different people, just as SONAR is.

You can record mulitple takes live in ACID, but you'd have to set loop playback active and you can only do it in one take; you'd have to record another track if you wanted to add to it later on as you've noted.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction about the "Loops for ACID "loop property" recognition" feature for Vegas 5.0: You'll probably be able to work with the ACIDized properties of a Loop, but nowhere near the control you would have in ACID itself.

I wouldn't know exactly how this would work, since Vegas does not operate on tempo (though it is related to time) or key, unless they keep the Loop isolated somehow.

But Vegas already has a bpm rate for every project (most people just donlt know it's there), so adding loops wouldn't be too much of a stretch perhaps ?

I do know that you can change the ruler to reflect measures and beats, for example, but isn't that just for reference for the most part? (I would imagine this would be particularly useful for MIDI sync purposes in the present incarnation.)

I always assumed it had a deeper significance since it was part of the project "properties" rather than just a "ruler" grid measure.... but what would I know ?

mD is correct in saying that the Vegas bpm property is only for reference and setting the ruler and grid marks. It becomes totally useless if a song changes tempo somewhere as this property can't changed at specific points. It is a much requested feature in the Vegas Audio forum that even if the bpm property remains more or less only a reference, that at least they give us the ability to change it to allow for tempo changes so that the grid doesn't become totally useless. I suppose if they're adding ACID looping features that this will be the case.

You mean actually open ACID projects (ACD files) in Vegas?

I can't really think of doing something like that unless the ACID project (or ACD file) gets converted on the fly before being opened in Vegas. (Note that I'm thinking in the present tense; I have no idea how Sony plans to implement the "ACID loop property" feature in Vegas.)

Aside from that, I also really didn't hear of any plans to implement MIDI in Vegas 5.0, so any MIDI in an ACID project would pretty much be a moot point.
