Subject:OT: Looking for input on a sampler/board

Just a quick ask here of those who use a sampler. What I'm looking for is something that I can load a disc from Big fish, etc. into. I don't need a lot of on-board features, just the ability to build a library of different sampled sounds that I can "play." I do all recording in Sonar (mostly midi-based) and edit in Forge. I never play out. I don't "perform" with the board at all. It is just a compositional tool Having never played with samplers before, I'm still very green, so I guess I'm looking for some advice. I'm currently looking at the Yamaha Motif, but am wondering if that's "more than I need."

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would look at something from Akai. I've found there's are the best samplers out there and come in a few different shapes and sizes, so you can get one with all the bells and whistles or one that will be a striped down version. Definately look for something that has a display that will give you a wave view of the sample. There is a little bit of a learning curve, but not quite as bad as everything else out there. The EMU samplers are good too. I've had my Akai sampler for 10 years, an S-2800 and it's still going strong. Also make sure it takes PC based RAM. That's the only thing I disliked about my old Akai sampler. It cost me $600 for 16 meg of RAM, about the same cost I paid for the entire sampler. You probably don't have to worry about that too much today, but you might want to ask to be sure.

Did you want a software sampler, or hardware?

With midi and NI - Kontakt, you can sample with absolutely amazing flexibility. You have a built in waveform viewer and so many settings, that you can spend hours on one little sample.

I have since sold my hardware sampler since the midi interface with the right software - changes everything.

I have the DS864 that came with Project 5. I was thinking hardware sampler to save on CPU usage.
