OMF & Vegas

I've been looking for answers to this question that I found dated Oct, 2003.

"Is there any equivalent to, or workaround to get OMF import/export with Vegas? Specifically I'm wondering if there's an efficient way to bring files from FCP or Avid/ProTools into the Vegas timeline, and out again."

I have the same issue since I'm working with an indie film maker using Avid, and wants to give me OMF files so I can work on audio for him then return it to him after editing and adding audio for him.

Thanks for your Help

Yeah, I have the same problem!!

there are so many video companies that works with FCP or Avid, and when they want to give you their files to work with, there is that NON-OMF function on Vegas that stops you!!

I really don't understand why sony doesn't want to open vegas to that pro functionnability!!!

Do they mean that you only have to work with Vegas users??? ;D

I can't find any info on the Avid supported file formats on the Avid site (besides what it stand for). Where can I find info?

I think OMF files are much more sophisticated than EDLs, they contain info on FXs and transitions etc.
So for this to make any sense to Vegas or for Vegas files to make any sense to an Avid system they have to use the same set of FXs etc. In other words you Avid defining what others NLEs can and cannot do. Is this such a good thing?

EDLs on the other hand are just a list of in and points so are much more portable. Even so working that one does confine one. You do the rough edits offline, upload the EDL to the big system and off you go. But you can only cut in the offline system, all the finishing and FXs have to be done online. Not such a big issue for the drama etc where you have a high shooting ratio, cutting is a major part of the work and if this can be done offline then a big saving can be made.

But you don't need this support to work on footage from an Avid or FCP system, you only need it to xfer the project, if all you are shifting is A/v then all the systems can swap tapes and or files around.

If you need to move an audio mix to or from Protools, this is the tool for you ($200 USD):

There is a program that will convert OMF files to Vegas and Vegas to OMF. Unfortunately, it sells for ~$800 US.

EDL Convert Pro from Cuibono SOftware will convert audio OMF files to and fromVegas. It will also convert between Adobe Audition, Sadie, SAW and a number of other audio programs and Vegas.
Unfortunately it does not convert the video as well as it is designed or the audio side of production.
It costs around $299 and can be found at

If you're moving a project to a high end Avid system then USD 800 is small change, care to tell use where to find this magic package?
I'm assuming it covers video and audio?

The program DaveT2 was probably referring to is AVtRansfer, developed in Australia by people associated with Fairlight audio DAW. It does include Vegas but is designed for Audio use only.

EDL Convert now includes video but generally as a mixdown so it's not much use when trying to convert to AVID for video editing. Of course Vegas 6 is rumoured to support AAF so that would solve the problems I guess. Other than high end AVIDS usually don't work in DV AVI video files but I guess upconverting or redigitsing is an option.

I use EDL Convert Pro all the time to convert OMFs from FCP to Vegas and it works GREAT!

It's not OMF, but...

Reports say Vegas 6 will support AAF, which I believe is compatible with both Avid and FCP.

Hang tight for a couple of days before shelling out any money.
