what is causing this error?

I had a very important project on the line that was due yesterday and CD Architect failed me. I've never had any problems with burning CDs in this program until I got this error after it gets to 27%:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
a write error occured. The disc may be dirty or corrupted.

'ATAPI MMC Compatible'-(0)
'ESDI_506'-(0)
-'HP CD-Writer+ 9100 1.0a'-(1)
Module atapimmc.cpp Line 1353
A medium error occurred.
Recovery has failed.

well, I know the disc isn't dirty or corrupted. I've used about 20 and a variety of different brands.
I'm using a HP 9100 CD Writer plus with no previous problems so I can't understand why this would happen. I need 100% relaibility for clients. Any ideas why it would burn up to about 27% then give me this error?

Hmmm,

That's interesting, because I had the same thing happen to me last week. I am running a Compaq Presario 2195us laptop......which is less than 3 months old.....and has had no problems burning discs with other programs. The drive in this machine is a toshiba dvd/cdrw combo drive.

As well, I only use mitsui silver media and have never had a corrupt piece in the 1000's I've used over the past several years (though I'm probably way, way past due). So...it is highly unlikely media is the issue.....though I could be wrong.

What was also strange was that when I tried burning again, I decided to "pre-render" the cd, before burning. Pre-rendering went fine, but then same error occurred again during burning.

The third time I "pre-rendered", and test-burnt the cd. Everything went fine until it was time to actually burn the disc, then the program gave me a message that said the media in the drive was "read-only".

On the fourth try, I'm not sure what happened, but the cd drive only ran at 8x speed and the disc wrote without a problem. Also, on this final attempt, there was no "pre-rendering" or test burning........so I don't know exactly what happened to make the disc write correctly....or at 8x only.

Very strange....anyone else having these problems?.....and if so....have you found a solution......and will you share it?

Thanks,
dwh

Read the error message - it says "Medium Error". This does not mean that it is not a 'minor' or 'serious' error, it means that the CD writer has reported that the medium has failed. The medium is the blank CD-R. It could be faulty, or just not very compatible with your writer. Try a different batch or brand of media.

Or given the consistant 27% factor, it could well indicate a problem with the hrad assembly carriage/drive in your writer.

Don't blame the messenger (CDA).

just like my original message stated I've already tried a variety of different brands of CDs and still come up with this error. If it's a medium error how come I'm only getting it on this particular project/arrangement? I just burned a new project with no issues at all. it's just the one arrangement that's giving me trouble.

I am awaiting a response from Sony.

I'm reading the CDA forum for quite a long time. It seems for me that some of the most active advisors allways tries to ignore the facts, reflected in the subjects. I too still can't escape the known issue of "buffer emptening" in CDA, although my PC is quite adequate and the burner is TEAC 552. As well I have nearly 100% succesful burning with different media using Nero and other nonprofessional soft. But as I am a great fan of Sonic Foundry soft and CDA as well I'm quite unhappy with the situation with CDA v5.0 for such a long time. Let us give each other only usefull advices, but not misleading ones !

I had this problem a few months ago and I did the followings:

a - Defragmented the drive that contains the files
b- Verify that I have at least 9 GIGS available on the C:\ drive otherwise. High speed burning requires as much as 10 times the capacity we have to burn.
Then everything went fine.
I do not think this is related to the Burner but it is much a question of available space on the Root drive.
