I've got some questions about samples levels. Well, for a new project, I'm working with Awave Studio, Acid Pro 4 and sfz. I have made a small soundfont for tests purposes (a cymbal). The cymbal sample is stereo and normalized at -16dB RMS using Soundforge. A soundfont sf2 file is created with Awave Studio 7. The sfz soundfont player is loaded into Acid Pro 4. When the original sample is played from Windows (media player, Winamp or whatever), the sound level is the same as that I hear in SoundForge when editing it (peak at about -9dB). However, when sfz plays midi notes in Acid (velocity, volume and expression all at 127), the sound level is lower (peak at -20dB). The same happens when notes are triggered by sfz pad. So, where is the problem ? Awave Studio ? Acid ? Sfz ? Any tips and tricks are welcome. |

I have finally got an explanation. Soundfont players keep some headroom because sequences are likely to produce a complete orchestration. If each instrument was at 0 dB, the mix would clip. On the other hand, the free sfz soundfont player has "hidden" parameters, such as an output level. To change those parameters, there is an unofficial freeware here. |
