hi everyone, i must say this forum is extremely helpful, and i sincerely appreciate the selfless and thorough help of those competent to help (which has thus far been most responses to previous queries).

This may be an obvious thing to some of you, but it hasn't been easy to figure out: after recording a segment from an audio taped interview, i notice that because of the source used there is naturally a high level of "white noise" (not sure I'm using the term properly), basically "fuzz"/hissing that is a constant throughout the tape. Fine. Now, what can I do within soundforge to reduce this noise. I have tried using noise gate, but this seems only helpful to reduce the noise during silences on the tape. I am hoping to have something that altogether reduces throughout the whole of the inteview that general hissing. any help???

thanks
mike

Try the Noise Reduction plug in. If you don't have it...uh...hmm, well it's the easy way to do this.

A good bit of fiddling with the Paragraphic EQ can help, but NR is the best way to go.
Read the manuals for the plug in if you do use it, it can be tricky for first time users.

Sonic Foundry/Sony have released a DirectX Plugin called "Noise Reduction" which can do exactly what you want. it can analyze the "white noise" and filter it out of the entire file without drastically changing the rest of the audio (in most cases). the only catch is that you need to have a part in the file where the noise is played without any other sounds, so that you can select it to be analyzed by the plugin. a few seconds is usually enough.

check out the Products section in the menu above for more info. (btw, if this sounds like a sales pitch, i don't work for Sony ;))

Yes. Noise Reduction is "expensive" but so satisfying that the cost soon loses its importance.

You choose a section of "white noise" and let NR sample that---as the last poster said. Then you sic it on the entire track and it will remove just that noise throughout.

Most wonderful of all: You can listen to the REMOVED sound to verify that only hiss has been removed. If too much has been removed, you can go back and run it again with "lighter" settings.

Expensive? Price the Waves Restoration bungle.
Sony NR-2 works.
