DVDA won't recognize Plextor 708 DVD RW

datguyDallas wrote on 2/5/2004, 9:13 AM
I recently bought a Plextor 708 external DVD drive running on Win98 SE. It works fine when I burn using Roxio's software, but DVDA will not recognize it. I have uninstalled the Roxio software and DVDA, then tried just using DVDA, and it still won't recognize it. The drive also shows up in 'My Computer' as a CD-ROM drive, but I have burned and watched a DVD with Roxio on a Playstation 2. I have also emailed Plextor and they said I need the update for DVDA, but I already have the most recent update and it still wont work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is killing me.

Thanks,

Tony

If the recorder is not in the list below then it is not supported by Sony. The best solution is to create the Mpeg files in DVDA and then go out and buy a copy of Nero and use that to write the disk. I realise that its a clumsy process but at least its a work around until or if Sony upgrade the product to something that works. Clearly they have some major problems with DVDA as they haven't upgraded the product or the supported product list for quite some time now.

Even though it's not in the now very out of date list it should still work as a generic ATAPI device. I'd suggest an email to Sony tech support if that doesn't get it going.

Believe it or not, here is a copy of the response I received when I tried Sony Support.;

Try using +RW or +R. I have the 708A also and have not been able to burn -R or -RW on it. If you really need it on -R, use nero as suggested or burn on +R/RW and then use a dvd copy program to get it on -R.

Cheers!

You know what is funny - I didn't relize that DVDA allowed for burning at all direct to disk! I have not really looked into that much but I recently got a DVD burner so I just started playing with it. The only thing listed under burn is the hard drive - there isn't even a greyed out drop down menu. Vegas lists the drive fine as does everything else - I mean Nero, Windows, the AC3 program, Sound Forge. etc. LOL! Learn something new everyday. :)

No need to pay for Nero just to burn DVD's with your DVDA output files. You already paid for a program that should do it, so why not use one of the many FREE programs out there that will burn DVDA's files for you, I have a Plextor 708 and use ImgTool program to convert the DVDA files to .iso (image files) then burn them to DVD on + or -R with DVDecrypter program. It's even simpler than it sounds and has always worked perfectly with high compatibility in home players. For more info on these and other useful programs check out dvdrhelp.com.

I have the same problem with my Plextor PX708-A. DVDA will not recognize
it if I have a DVD-R in the tray, but WILL recognize it if I have a DVD+R in
the tray. What's up with that? Seems very strange to me. I can't see how
the media can stop a program from recognizing the drive. I do hope that Sony addresses this problem, or I'll have to support another authoring
program.

That's strange - I just discovered a similar problem with my new Lite-On 411S burner.

I'd only used it with DVDA for + discs previously, no problems, then yesterday tried to burn a -R and a -RW and received an Error 0x8004e0c8 (message missing) with both.

It could of course be burner related - I have no other software to try yet, but will get something ....

(Edit:) I just installed the software that came with the burner (Sonic Record Now DX) and it easily burns the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders that DVDA creates onto DVD-R and -RW.

What a relief!

It is certainly strange that DVDA can find the same drive and record + but not - .

So, the BIG question is - there are now scores of good quality burners out there in the market, but the DVDA compatibility list only has 12. Could someone from Sony please reassure us that this is in hand .....?

BTW that drive comes with Roxio Easy CD-Crator 6.0 You can always use that. Just dumpt the folders that DVDA created into the left pane and go....

Dwuane,

use the Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 Classic software that was bundled with your drive for the burn part of your project. Works like a charm on DVD-R's
Dwuane wrote on 2/16/2004, 4:31 PM
I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

Well, I gave the Roxio 6 a shot, and made nothing but coasters with it.
Everytime I try to play the DVD it tells me that it is an unsupported or
unrecognized format. I know that it has to be something that I'm doing wrong
but I don't know what it is. I'm dragging the folder from above to the burn
area below, and clicking the burn button. It burns, but unfortunately
doesn't seem to burn in a format my players understand.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have Nero 6 and it works fine. Use the burn "VIDEO DVD" feature. Drag in the files that were rendered by DVDA. It's one extra step to make, but 'til DVDA gets an update I'll deal with it.

I have tried what you suggest by using EZCD 6.x and burn the DVDA folders but I get an error that AC3 is not supported. I also tried to make it work with Sonic DVD and it said the 3.8GB file was too large and would not burn. I finally got Nero to burn it but the DVD was lousy and skipped. I finally put my 1.x burning back in and it works great. Can you offer some tips on how to make EZCD work. Can AC3 be turned off.

I am guessing you are using -R media. If so, switch to +R. Worked for me. Do not know why, but I do not think DVDA will even recognize the drive without +R media.

Hey k2r,

"BTW that drive comes with Roxio Easy CD-Crator 6.0 You can always use that. Just dumpt the folders that DVDA created into the left pane and go...."

I'm having the same problems, nothing new there, but I've tried every which way to get ECDC6 to burn my project properly. Is there a secrete to it? ECDC only recognizes the .VOB files, not the others that are in the VIDEO_TS folder. I can burn the main movie, but none of the chapter selection menus. Sounds like it should be simple, but I've not figured it out yet. Just wish DVDA worked as I had hoped, shouldn't need a third utility to finish a project. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

One thing I have noticed is that some of the burning software dumps the identification of the burners drive letter. Some programs will still work but DVDA will not and fails to recognize your burner. You have to go into Systems Administrator and reassign the drive letter. It's a problem I have had resulting in my A06 not being recognized by DVDA. May help!

I've been seeing this off and on with the Plextor 708A as well. Although, I've never had a problem with that drive while using +R/+RW media. Really only seems to occur with -R/-RW media.

It's not a 100% repro for me however - but we are trying to figure it out. Overall, I've been pretty happy with Plextor's drives, but there's just something strange with this one. (and their 2410A CD burner - but that's a different story)

Thanks.
