Subject:Sonic Foundry Acid vs Sony Acid

I see Sonic Foundry Acid Pro 4.0 for sale on the internet from various retailers. The SF version is cheaper than the Sony version so it is tempting. Does anyone know if there is any difference between the two? Does Sony recognize the older SF versions for purposes of upgrade, update or anything else?

Any info is appreciated.

Strange. Anyway, ACID Pro 4.0 is basically ACID Pro 4.0, be it branded Sonic Foundry or Sony. Sony recently rebranded the software via the 4.0f update.

What you could do is simply buy the software and use the registration key included with the software to unlock the update, which actually can act as the full version.

Yes theres a difference that Sony denys or won't talk about. And I'm not talking about the box.

Its called fishy code with questionable intent.

That makes sence. Sony just swooped in, and bought out the rights from Sonic Foundy and said....... lets make an inferior product so everyone will stop buying our software.

I don't see any difference between 4.0 and 4.0f. It's all the old SF programers anyway.

Warren,
Don't mean to be harsh, but your recent "spyware" posts in the forum seem "fishy and with questionable intent".

If you have some solid evidence of something strange, then be explicit and don't troll for drama.

BTW I'm writing this using one of the biggest "spyware" software packages on the market today: Microsoft Windows. So you're going to have to really find something juicy to make me any more paranoid ;)

Buy the Sonic Foundry version and download the most recent patch to get the green icon...that's pretty much the only difference.

Ok, I will bite. What is this fishy code. I have it all right here in front of me.

What is that you found that is so "big brother" like?

Peter, cmon don't lie to us, we all know that Sony has teamed up with Bonzy Buddy, and Gain, to include these spyware in all their softwares !

This is not a secret anymore, BigSony is watching our beats and making stastistics to be more accurate for the sales of its next Acid Loops Sample CDs... What a shame

I mean, c'mon Warren, you're not the first one here having this big epiphany. Right now in the studios we're all running like headless chickens... Even Ad-aware can't remove these !

This is a huge issue. Every time I start up Sony Acid, Bonzy Buddy begins asking me questions about my style of music and the label i'm working for... This is insane ;-)

To set the record straight, this spyware thread is bogus.

I have no idea why anyone would think to accuse our apps of installing any spyware. Plain and simple, we do not. As Sonic Foundry, we did not, and as Sony, we do not.

OK, back to business.

Maybe talkin' about the Net Notify option. Hasn't figured out yet that it's only to see if an update is available and that it's easily disabled AND that it was there when SoFo owned Acid.

Let's all settle down, and start using this "great" software that the gifted people at SF/Sony have given us, Instead of complaining and making up theories that are unfounded and full of BS!!

"That for all the unseen programmers out there, that work so hard to give us this amazing tool and all we do is bitch about it"

Thanks,

Peter, SONYPCH,

Relax, I am still here. I will tell you, however, that it's a shame you have to stoop to the comments you made at the end of your post. No reason to attack people here. And if you're a Sony employee, shame on you. I'm sure thay would never tolerate it and if they would tolerate it, then shame on them too.

That being said, what tools are you using to debug and "see" the code in front of you? What is it you're looking for and where? If you don't know what to look for, you'll never find anything and that goes for everything in life, doesn't it?...not just code. And I'm not going to slander the company or put undue stress on myself to devulge what I see. I don't have any obligation to nor do I have a need for Sony on my back.

So you have an absolute right to not believe me. Go on using the product. It is useful and I use it every day (SF version of course). But what I would suggest is that people use it on a PC that is NOT connected to the internet. That way you will be OK and the code won't come into question. It is internet related....OK there's your hint.

Now go find it...

Erika, at the risk of sounding anal, what is this "code" you're referring to? Please extrapolate, because if you cannot at least provide any proof, then all of us here (in the community) can only claim it as bogus.

Joel has already refuted your claim of spyware. He and Peter do, indeed, work for Sony. I trust them as I have for a couple (few?) years now.

The only thing I can think of is the "Net Notify" feature, which can be turned off by the user. That's not exactly spyware.

warrenbfet's attitude reminds me somewhat of the way SCO is operating at the moment. first yelling and screaming about specific code, but then refusing to say which code exactly the problem is. i'm waiting for you to sue Sony now.

oh, and the "hint" you gave us, "internet related" ... OMG what a surprise!!! seriously, i mean, you say spyware code and then you hint that it has something to do with the internet? wow, i would never have thought of that!!

like i said in another post (which you conveniently ignored), put up or shut up. post this code and stop trying to act like an adult who is knowledgable about this kind of stuff, or piss off and go cry to your friend about the unfairness of it all.

Your right. I appologize for the snide comment. Shame on me for letting you comments provoke me.

There isn't much point in this. You wont say what it is you 'found' because there is nothing to find. Believe and say what you want as this is an open forum - as long as you keep it clean.

The users here know the truth and that there is nothing in our code that does anything even remotely like you imply. I will leave it to them to decide the truth. They know me from these forums and know I am straight with them about our products.

The SF version and the current Sony version are the same - other than the logo changes. 4.0f was just a rebrand.

Peter
