What is Vegas doing post render?

Scenario: render a long section of video to Mpeg2 (say, 60+ minutes). After the percentage has reached 100% and the preview window has stopped showing new frames being processed - ie when the render has finished - the hard drive contibues to work on for approx 60-90 seconds. The render dialog doens't indicate completion until the drive has stopped doing this.

I don't think it's copying data from one drive to another, as I have my temp directories set to the same drive I render to.

I don't think it's scanning an audio peak file (although its similar-soundingdrive activity ).

So what is it doing?

I always assumed it was emptying a buffer.

The render progress shows which frames have been created by Vegas. If the file format plug-in has any post processing to do, that will happen after the last frame is rendered. For example, in order to compress MPEG, you need to buffer a few frames. So, even after Vegas returns the last frame, there is still work to do.
