hi there, i can't seem to figure out how to get soundforge to record from any other mp3 player while it is running, i can only get it to recognize line in inputs. For example, if i am using Roxio's Audio Editor, i can choose as my record input "cd audio", or "stereo". How can i do this with soundforge, and if it is some configuration with the sound card, how is that done??

thanks
michael

Double click the speaker icon in the systray > Options > Properties > Recording > OK, now select the proper input. SoundForge records from what is selected via Windows.

These instructions are for generic soundcards, otherwise refer to your soundcard's documentation to accomplish this if the terminology is different or if your MP3 player uses USB (you give no details as to it's connection), in SoundForge > Options > Preferences > Wave > Record, check the dropdown for it's listing.

thanks, this was successful. whereas with the roxio program i can choose microphone or stereo from within the program. With soundforge, i need to go into the speaker settings, and then "select" the "stereo" option (and thus uncheck "microphone).

thanks again,
m

Next question is, why are you recording the output in Sound Forge? Can't you open the MP3 file directly?

i am choosing to do this for a few different reasons. In one case I am wanting to change the format of an electronic music file (real audio to mp3 for example), and in another instance, there was a song from an internet radio service that I wanted to record and remember to find the artist...

thanks,
m

Hi there,
I think that if you want to change the format of a music file, instead of recording your sound again, you can just open it in Sound Forge and "save as" it in the format you want.
It's easier, and better for the quality of your sound.

Except that that won't work for RealMedia or streaming files. These would have to be re-recorded on the fly as they play.
