sorry if its an obvious question for the savy among you, but i am new to soundforge and it doesn't seem the most intuitive in features and customizations. How can I enable soundforge to play the sound i am recording while in the process of recording. this is obviously essential so i can know the end of the clip i am recording...

thanks,
michael

Without further detail from you as to your technique and gear, place a check in the "Monitor" box in the Record window in SoundForge.

hi there, i have tried checking and unchecking the "monitor" button, and this makes no difference. My sound card is working fine, i can run real player, win media player, etc., and if using roxio audio monitor can record and hear the input being recorded.

Further irrespective of what is being recorded (in this case a walkman playing an audio cassette using a cable with headphone jack (both ends) into the mic input of the laptop).

If i open my volume control, all the boxes for mute are "unchecked".

what other info would help me verify the problem...???
thanks,
m

Are the record meters in Sound Forge showing input? (Ctrl+R) if not, select the appropiate sound card in Options>Preferences>Wave.
In Windows, check soundcard settings: Double-click the speaker icon. Select Options>Properties>Recording>Line. Under Show the following volume controls.Check mark the box for Line. Adjust the line volume control for optimal record levels while viewing the Sound Forge record window meter. Ctrl+R The soundcard's Options>Properties>Playback window Line volume controls the loudness of the line input going to your speakers .The Options>Properties>Record window Line volume controls the loudness of the line input going to Sound Forge. (or other recording software)

Do what rraud said. Also you're pluggin a tape player into the "mic" input jack on your sound card. A tape player is a "LINE" level signal, thus you need to plug into the "LINE IN" of your soundcard. If you wish to plug into the MIC in of the soundcard, then do everything rraud suggested, just replace the "LINE" parts with "MIC".

"thus you need to plug into the "LINE IN" of your soundcard"

This is why laptops are a different animal and that fact should be expressed up front. Many laptop's soundcards evoke double duty on it's input, labeling it "Mic" in and must be switched via it's software to disable the pre-amp and accept "Line" signal.

I bailed when you mentioned it was a laptop because laptops use proprietary soundcards and don't follow somewhat standard logic.

If audio is important to you, I strongly suggest you look in other directions such as firewire, USB 2 or Desktop solutions.
