John, the point is that the few people who do know aren't allowed to tell, and even if they were allowed to they won't. And, just about everyone who frequents this forum should know that by now. In many ways it's bad to preannounce these things. Competitors will get an idea of what you're up to and try to beat you with that feature in their next upgrade. They'll also rush to release whatever they have right before you are planning to so that everyone will buy their software and not have cash left over for yours. Also, if you preannounce a feature that then doesn't come to be, everyone gets mad at you. Everyone except your competitors, of course.
IM Curious to see how they will improve it .. I bet it will be improvements not even thought of by us.. But we will say yeah thats a great idea.. Anyway for me iyts exciting like waitin for xmas PREZZIES in a way..
But I would not want Vegas losing out by letting slip Info.
Hey Gary,
You've been on a roll lately. Keep it going!
BTW, i think the guy in the dvda forum call you a "little one who soils his pants".
I mean, I'm not trying to start anything here, just trying to translate.

First, to be fair, the John who started this thread may not be a frequent traveler on this forum. So he might not realize that this question keeps getting asked. (And you know it will be asked again, too).
Second, from a DVD forum, someone lost their job with Apple when he apparently let some information out that Apple thought was under their "nondisclosure" clause.
I certainly wouldn't want Sony to lose any money, heaven forbid, and I totally understand proprietary software principles, but some sort of peep of information like "we're still working on it and you can expect a new version in the future" wouldn't give away the store and it would some of us who have been putting up with the likes of DVD-A for all this time with hopes of a version that corrects some of the "First release" problems we've had. There is also the stigma of the recent company change and I, for one, am curious if there is future for Vegas and DVD-A. There are other packages that would work for me, but I've always been loyal to SFO and I've always liked their software. Is it too much to ask for a "stay tuned" message?
The biggest missing feature with Vegas is the ability of nested timelines. This was also the biggest missing feature of Premiere until the release of Prmeiere Pro just recently...... so I'm hoping that in the spirit of competition Vegas 5 will have nested timelines.
Tser is correct--this has been a longish development cycle--I think its over a year now---I understand that there was a major corporate upheaval so that probably explains the lengthy period between upgrades. Anyhow, I am sure that by the end of the summer we will see version 5.0.
I actually think there's a lot that we can expect from Vegas 5: advanced cookie cutter, some kind of masking and better text engine would be on my list.
I think patience is a virtue here. If V5 looks a lot like V4, then why bother? I'd like to see V5 soon, as well...but I'd like to see a V5 that's worth the upgrade $$$.
Nested time lines really permit you to create several versions or sections of a given piece. Then you just switch back and forth between version (in Premiere I think its a drop down menu) and make your decisions.
I agree. I'm not in a big hurry and what I have works for the most part. I'm just really curious and some sort of "bone" like "we're still here and there will be a Vegas 5 and DVD-A in some forseeable future would be enough for me. As it is the SOFO guys barely even frequent the newsgroup these days. I guess the group is still here (web server still working) so that means at least that much ... whatever that is... :)
Tserface,
here is your bone, plus a second bone to satiate your desire ;) Bone 1 Bone 2
Sweet sassy molassy, SonyEPM , has posted twice about exactly what you and I want. DVD-A, IMHO, will be great and it will be out before too long.
Also, despite what many people say I don't think the switch to Sony from SoFo would delay current development due to regular transition issues. Since they are the same people in the same building there weren't too many transition issues I would imagine. If anything, the delay would be due to adding on hardware compatability that wasn't planned under SoFo or making the bang of V5 even bigger since it will be Sony's debut with the title.
(PS. I am not an insider, just on the side wishing I was in)
