A Sony rep at Acid Planet told me that the currently available Sound Forge 7.0 software would not work with my Windows 98 SE system, so I would have to find some used Sound Forge 6.0 software. So I got some in an auction at ebay, and the disc I was sent did seem to install the program on my computer. But as soon as I tried to start the program, it asked for a Serial Number which I wasn't given. I couldn't get anywhere without it. Of course, I then sent an e-mail to the guy who sold it to me through ebay. So far, I haven't received a response. How is getting used software supposed to work? What are the serial number and registration issues? How does a person make sure they aren't being ripped-off? |

You pay by Credit Card so you can dispute the charge if the seller does not provide the expected merchandise. Ebay and PayPal etc., I believe have similar consumer protection plans. Check with them. Check the TOS for Sound Forge also, I seem to remember that when transferring the licence the seller is to contact Sony or something along those lines. The key should be included with the CD. Mine was on the manual I believe when I bought the boxed version of SF 5, if not it was on the CD sleeve. MJ |

Did this software happen to come on a Sonic Foundry CDrom or a CDR? You might be lucky to contact customer service if it's an authentic Sonic Foundry CDrom and get some help, although the guy that sold it could have it installed on his system yet and make that option not possible either. He should have sent you a serial number with the software. If it's on a CDR, he sold you pirated software. |

Usually, yes, but not necessarily---if the original disk was damaged and he had a backup disk. I passed on my SF Studio 6 to my daughter, having purchased a full new SF 6 for myself. I contacted (then) Sonic Foundry customer support by email and asked one extremely helpful Jane Pearson how this transfer would take place. She explained that my daughter could install the SF-S on her computer, but then would only be able to use it after entering a new registration number, which Ms Pearson herself would furnish to her after my daughter contacted her with the serial number. Of course all this is totally easy via email. If the two eBay parties are being open with each other, a similar transfer shouldn't be difficult to carry out. The seller won't be able to do it if he continues to "keep" SF for his own use. I wish the buyer good luck. |
