I have read through the topics on this forum, and fiddled with as many audio settings as I can. I can record fine in SoundForge 7, but Acid Pro 4 gives me this error when I try to record:

"The record device ESS AudioDrive does not support the current input format."

or..

"The record device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not support the current input format"

.. if I try to switch to another audio device. I've tried resetting to lowest possible sample rate (8-bit), but still same error. I realize I am running an older ISA ESS1688 Audiocard, but I am able to sample up to 16-bit / 192,000 in SF, but Acid won't let me .. Is there something odd in the nature of Acid when recording vs. just playing back? It appears this is a common error, and I cannot use this wonderful program until this is resolved ..

ideas?

It plays back fine but does not record at the same bit-depth/sample rate?

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling ACID? (You might to try reinstalling or updating soundcard drivers if possible.)

Yes - correct. It plays fine in SF or Acid 4, I can record at 16-bit in SF, but not Acid.

I have tried installing/re-installing Acid several times. (incl. diff. updates - I am running 4.0d now).

As far as drivers go, I don't think updating these ESS1688 ISA drivers will yield a better result than the ones built in to WinXP.

My guess is that this card does not support full duplex i/o. That is, it can either record or playback, but not both at the same time. This is typical of ISA cards.

Forge does not attempt to use the card in full duplex, that is why you can record with it in Forge. ACID always opens the output, so you will not beable to record in ACID.

If I may suggest such fully capable cards:

M-Audio Audiophile 2496

Echo MiaMIDI

Others can chime in too.
