Can I connect amplitube in some kind of effect chain or a bus such that I can use in in real time, i.e. hear the effects of amplitube as I play? The amplitube manual seems to indicate this, but I can't get it going. Any help TIA!!!!

You can't direct monitor the input of you audiocard throught an Fx with Acid Pro. But you can do this with a free software (only for VST fx, so that include your Amplitube) :

I tried that but so far I only get a bunch of ground like noise with amplitube.

Since a guitar has a high impedence, I'd highly suggest picking up a DI box (which would lower the impedence for use with something like a mixer or your Layla).
