hi,

I bought about 2 years ago a Sony Minidisc portable recorder, and I bought a usb one so I can transfer my recordings from the minidisc to my computer faster and more cleaner than via analogic way!
It appeared that the transfer from your own recordings on the MD to the computer was disabled!!

Is it still the case now with sound forge 7 @ sony??

thx!

I don't know of any portable MD where it's posible to export digital data to PC , USB or other-wise. Import yes ( PC to MD)

There are studio MD decks with SPDIF outs.

HI!

I have the same problems as you had: Having a minidisc with a USB adaptor device so I could import my sound from the MD to soundforge digital. But it does ot work: No sound at all!! Have you found out how to do this, and if so I would be very happy if you would tell me how!! PS I have windows XP:

This won't answer the question but I can confirm that it can be done. I remotely connected to someone's PC with a Sony MD that was connected via USB and he was able to transfer his data to SF 5 at that time perfectly.

I don't know the model or how he set it up so I can't help with that. I'd expect there are USB drivers for it though as he had the USB selection in SF's Preferences.

isn't transferring from MD to pc intentionally made impossible, because of the whole DRM thing etc? the way i understand it , the big corps are afraid people will use it to copy music illegally, so they disabled the feature altogether. i could be mistaken tho, but that's the general vibe i picked up when i was still frequently visiting certain big MD forums.

Yep, i believe so.

I bought a SONY NetMD recorder specifically to use it for recording live events and then transfer the files to hard drive. Turns out that despite the advertising hype the digital transfer from MiniDisc to PC doesn't exist. So, i find myself still carrying the whole computer along with me.

I found this particularly exasperating since i am generally hired by the artists themselves to record their own original material for them. There certainly isn't any copyright infringement involved. Too bad i can't get the blasted thing to understand that.

As far as I know.... no MDs have MD-to-PC file transfer capability, USB or otherwise.
Some pro portables and many of the rack mount MDs do have S/PDIF out, but they're real-time playback, they are digital though.

Do you know of a specific portable that has spdif out? I haven't been able to locate any.

Thanks,

The new Sony Hi-MD format with Net MD, being introduced now, will allow you to make USB transfers from the MD device to the PC, but only for recordings you make on the MD device. For instance, you cannot transfer a music file from one computer to the MD and then go to another PC and upload it (due to the copyright thing) but things you record onto the MD from its analog inputs can be uploaded. The units are due in the US this summer.

You can get more info at www.minidisc.org.

This has been one of my disappointments in MD as well, although I love the units I have. Looks like they are finally are going to let us take advantage of the capabilities and have found a way to do so and still deal with the copyright thing. Also the new MiniDiscs will have higher capacity storage, effectively 1 GB on a disc!.

I for one am looking forward to this!

Any chance of being able to trade my current unit in for one of the new models? ;)

drbarn,
The MD portables from Maranz and HHB have S/PDIF in and out..... However they are pricey. ... but have pro-features: XLRs, phantom power, good mic pre-amps, ect..

Plasmavideo Tom, Thanks for the info. I too will look into this.
