when i lay out a track and want to automate a flange effect i noticed it applies the effect right away.how do i apply the effect lets say 5 bars down the track?what am i missing?

You should be able to select a new envelope for "bypass" in the fx automation dialog for the track. Set this to "True" for the first 5 bars, then "False" when you want to hear the effect.
