Subject:Can SF do Garageband like midi?

A couple of years ago I started using cakewalk home version a little so my wife could record some of her piano music onto the computer through the midi cable. I gave up doing much with it...

Now, all my buddies are big MAC fans and I have to admit, I am a little envious of how easy and exciting garageband is. I use vegas 4 all the time and love it! For that reason I was wondering if SF can do what garageband does, ie-choose an instrument like strings section or 70's psych guitar amp and have that show up in the audio track by playing my digital piano? Does that make sense? Basically, can SF do what Jobs did when he showed off garageband for its realease at the mac show a few weeks ago? He chose amongst a large assortment of instrument sounds for a track. Hooked up a keyboard. Played the keyboard and whatever instrument he had selected, that instrument's sound was recorded according to the note played on the keyboard.

I would love any help on this since I don't know much about audio.
thanks,
Carson Calderwood

No. Sound Forge is a simple stereo editor. The only audio it can generate is what you record or what the Tools->Synthesis options yield.

There are a lot of other PC tools out there like FruityLoops, Orion, etc. that are more synth-centric. But Sony ACID is probably the most similar to GarageBand. Download a demo and give it a whirl.
