Subject:Preferred techniques of sampling?

My question is if you sample a bassline from an old electronic tune i.e. an old House record, but you can't get the bassline on its own without beats, I would value the opinion of the forum on the following: - 1) Would you ditch the sample as unworkable? 2) If you use the sample but wish to add your own beats would you try to edit out the kick drum of sample. If so, are there any tricks as to how to do this without losing elements of the bassline? I have tried many different things and normally I find with non-electronic records it adds to the flavour to leave the orig kick as they may not be as dynamic or high in the mix as an electronic kick. I am learning by trial and error as I go along and just wondered what the Pro's do! Thanks for your help on this. It is much appreciated. |

IMO, most pros would no sample a bassline from an old recording - at least no so you could recognize it. It is illegal and potentially costly to use someone else's musical material without their permission. I know 80's rap lived on this kind of stuff, and it was very creative, but it's dangerous now. As someone who composes music for comercial projects (no pop releases) I have to verify that my music is free of copyright problems. |

I hear what you are saying David, but I am using this purely to do my own re-edits or slight updates of my fav tunes from years ago. I am well aware of the legal issues. It's solely for my own use to play when I dj as I love these tunes and it's just nice to surprise a crowd with a subtle remix. You must also remember that many of us are brought up on sampled records, specially in the UK. Thanks for the warning. |

In that case... can you edit out the BD? If it were a drum loop you could eq the bass freq out of the loop, but you can't do that with a bass loop. Two BDs aren't bad unless they conflict. Another solution is to recreate the Bass pattern. You will learn a whole lot by doing that! |

This is true. I will learn more recreating. It's very hit and miss as I'm not trained musically. Thank you for your help. I am going to try some VSTi's to knock up some basslines of my own aswell. |
