So, I've searched the web for an answer and can only find a smattering of info about this topic. Has anybody managed to get Sound Forge (4.5, 5, 6, 7, etc.) to run under Virtual PC or Bochs on their Mac running OS X? With the release of Garage Band I'm beginning to take using my Power Book as an editor seriously, but all of the software I've tried - free, Free, demos, etc. - pales in comparison to Sound Forge. I hate ProTools (that's right DigiDesign, it stinks!), Bias and Reason are alright...but nothing compares to SF. I'd give my left arm to be able to run SF 4.5 on my Power Book, and much more of my anatomy to get 6 or 7 running. Anybody have any luck, or am I off my rocker? |

I've run Sound Forge v4.5 on a MAC using Virtual PC. I'm trying to recall what I had to do, it's been awhile since I did it. I think I just had to make sure my audio Ins/outs where assigned in the MAC's default audio playback device in the MAC OS....(sorry forget what's it's called now on the Mac of what the name is for the equivalent of Windows Sound Mapper) . Then in Sound Forge, you choose the Microsoft Sound Mapper as your sound card driver. Virtual PC will do the translation between the MAC default sound OS record/playback device and assign it to the Windows Sound Mapper equivalent. Of course this was before OSX that I did this, I believe I was running OS8 on the MAC. |

How much do those parts of your anatomy cost? I'll bet an awful lot more than a reasonably priced Windows/Intel based notebook computer would. Why not get one of those instead? |

I recently put a copy of SF 7 on my iBook. The iBook runs OS X 10.3 and the latest version of Virtual PC. I did it mostly to see if it could be done. It works, but it aint the way i'd wish to do my editing! Understand that I use Peak to do the recording then move the .aif files to a PC to do the editing. On a recent long drive home I did some editing with SF on the mac. familiarity with SF made it marginally better that Peak, but not much. I agree with chienwoRks, if ur going to do more than a little work with SF, go buy a PC laptop. ..spalding |

Thanks for the input. When I was deciding between a Power Book and a ThinkPad I thought about Sound Forge, but I wanted the reliability of the Mac, as well as some other non-sound related features. Let's just say I've had some bad experiences with Windows laptops... I'll try Virtual PC with SF6 and see what happens... Easier than a new PC notebook is a new PC desktop, something I desperately need but since I fly back and forth across the country about 10 times a year I'm going to see which side I end up on before digging in. Thanks again, all! |
