I am a new user of Acid, and I am experiencing very bad sound quality when I play back my tracks. The sound becomes distorted when more than one loop is playing. Can anyone help?

Is it clipping? If so, try turning down the master.

Generally i turn down the track levels by about 1.5dB for each additional track. So if i have 7 tracks i'll start by turning them all down 9dB, then mix from there. Your mileage will vary.

About how many loops are playing back at the same time?

What's your soundcard?

I have a very basic sound card. I am getting a new computer next week, for which i have not yet choosen a sound card. Im assuming that the sound card along with the number of tracks im playing back is a major determinent of the sound quality? I have been plaing back about 3 at once. Thanks for your responses everyone!

Hmmm...

3 tracks is really low.

Are you using ACID Pro 4.0? The Pro version of ACID lets you choose a specific driver model that your soundcard uses. (If you are using ACID Pro, go to Options>Preferences on the menu bar and then click the Audio tab to choose a specific driver model.)

Try upgrading your soundcard's drivers if possible. You can also try and reduce or turn off video acceleration and/or update your video drivers. (Video, believe it or not, can cause a number of problems even with audio apps like ACID.)

If you're very serious about audio, consider a pro-level soundcard like those from Echo or M-Audio. (Others can chime in as well.) Note that these soundcards were not designed with computer games in mind. If you like to play computer games, you can have two soundcards in one system—one for gaming and the other for pro audio.

Just in case you're using Screenblast:
There is apparently a bug (at least with mine) that will randomly add "the FX, "Distortion" to tracks. The workaround of course is to select the FX button for that track and uncheck "Distortion".

i clicked on the link to look at the echo product line and i noticed the layla 24 recording system is a multitrack recorder? It said it is compatible with most recording software? would it work with sonic acid 4.0?

Acid can be so good but it needs to be mutlitrack to compete with the BIG DAWGS

Vegas is Sony's full-fledged multitrack recording program, and as an Acid user you'll feel right at home in it.

As for the Layla24, it does indeed work in Acid. Sounds great, too. And Echo's drivers are the most stable I've used.

Ditto what planders said; almost any professional-recording gear will work with ACID Pro as long as the vendor provides MME, WDM or ASIO drivers for the product.

Also mirroring what planders said, ACID was in no small way meant to be a multitracker (especially for recording multiple tracks at once, which ACID cannot do literally); that title belongs to Vegas. ACID is a loop-based music composition tool. It's meant to complement other apps like Vegas and Sound Forge (much as those apps complement ACID with their capabilities).
