Not that I know of. You might want to contact Apple (since that's the format their iTunes site uses) and see if they can arrange something with Sony? (Don't hold your breath, though. They have competing apps. I know there are other apps that can work with the format, but only if the system is authorized to work with the specific file, amongst other things.)

Well... AAC is an open format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. Just because Apple implemented it first does not mean that Sony would need Apple's permission or help to do the same.

I would have thought that there would at least have been a third party plugin available.

Since it's a format with rights management features and licensing requirements, I can't imagine it being included "free" with Sound Forge or any other editor. That said, it's certainly possible that MainConcept would add it to their MPEG plugin, either the standalone encoder or the bundled one included with SF. Probably wouldn't appear before the next major upgrade, though.

Depending on the licensing terms, it might have to remain a separate purchase (like the AC-3 pack for ACID).

Actually, you're right...to a point.

RealNetworks, from what I've heard, is also gearing up to release its own version of the AAC format...complete with its own digital rights technology. (See where I'm going here?)

This could be a snafu, because the versions of AAC won't be exactly interchangeable. You'll have AAC-Apple/iTunes and AAC-Real. AAC's bought at iTunes should be playable on RealPlayer 10, but AAC's bought from Real won't be playable on iTunes.

(See the CNET story here.)
