Slightly OT: SONY Hi-MD

For some reason I did not find any mention of this new format. Well, not entirely new, since it is based on MD (Mini-Disc).

What's in it for us? A lot. It will become the best way to get high quality sound in the field and into your editing workstation. Several hours of ATRAC3+ at 132 Kbps on a single disk, recorded from mike that you can place practically anywhere you want (recorder itself is very small and highly autonomous), and uploadable (for the first time with MD media) to computer.

Since it is digital and you can position precisely with timecode (sorry for a loose use of a term), syncing with video should be painless. Of course, better tools and out-of-box support for capturing from Hi-MD device would be appreciated.

I know, Spot is already using and recommending MD devices. Hi-MD is a definite step forward. And should be available very soon.

Alexei, if you use the angle brackets < > instead of the square brackets [ ] you'll make a clickable link.

I dunno how "high quality" 132k would be (with MP3 I don't care for it, but with newer algorithms it might be cool), but it will also give 6 hours at over 256k, and almost 2 hours of 16/44.1 linear PCM. Now THAT is cool!

That was my intention to make it clickable. I had an old post explaining it and it did nebtion square brackets. Oh, well. Maybe it was for old version of forum. There is nothing in forum FAQ about embedding links anyway.

Yes, 256Kbps will be cool. ATRAC3+ at 132Kbps is equivalent MP3 at about 160-192Kbps, in my opinion. Of course, it depends on the nature of sound and sound source. I don't think you'll gain much with 256Kbps for recording with microphone.

And a disadvantage also is no XLR inputs in MD units. Is it desirable?

Funny I haven't seen much info generated about Archos MP3 recorder...with firmware upgrade (free) from Rocbox, it is capable of recording at 192/48hz on a 20GB drive and upload via USB2....
